If no health care overhaul passes Congress, health insurers may be in for a windfall -- and one far larger that most Americans probably realize.

According to a study by a pro-health reform group published Thursday, the nation's largest five health insurance companies posted a 56 percent gain in 2009 profits over 2008. The insurers including Wellpoint, UnitedHealth, Cigna, Aetna and Humana, which cover the majority of Americans with insurance.

The insurers' hefty profit gains came even as 2.7 million more Americans lost their insurance coverage due to the declining economy.

Sen. Jim DeMint went on Fox News' Your World yesterday to explain why he's been holding up the appointment of a new Transportation Safety Administration chief's appointment: Namely, he's more concerned about the potential unionization of the TSA than he is about the agency's ability to function properly.

Of course, he claims that keeping the unions out is essential to making them able to function well:

DeMint: It makes absolutely no sense to submit security in our airports and the passengers here in this country to collective bargaining with unions.

Of course, that would preclude such things as air-traffic controllers unions too -- but then, DeMint is probably fine with that. Because unions are a greater threat than terrorists.

McClatchy has the full story:

Who's running the TSA? No one, thanks to Sen. Jim DeMint

WASHINGTON -- An attempt to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day would be all-consuming for the administrator of the Transportation Security Administration — if there were one.

The post remains vacant because Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., has held up President Barack Obama's nominee in opposition to the prospect of TSA workers joining a labor union.

... Two Senate committees have given Southers their bipartisan blessing. An acting administrator is in place pending his confirmation.

Marshall McClain, the president of the Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers Association, said that the Senate should have acted sooner to confirm Southers.

"Friday's terrorist attack on U.S. aviation makes it all the more imperative that there be no further delays in filling this crucial position," he said.

DeMint said in a statement that the attempted attack "is a perfect example of why the Obama administration should not unionize the TSA." He wants Southers to clarify his stand on unionizing the TSA, a shift that Democrats support.

Without collective bargaining, DeMint said, the TSA has "flexibility to make real-time decisions that allowed it to quickly improve security measures in response to this attempted attack."

If organized labor got involved, DeMint said, union bosses would have the power "to veto or delay future security improvements at our airports."

Middle class individuals and small businesses should be outraged that Terrance Wall, a multi-Millionaire, worth between $50 and $129 MILLION, could get away with not paying his fair share of taxes.  They should be even more outraged that he would want to run to be "their" Senator, so that he could push for even more legislation which would allow him access to create even more loopholes!  Considering that people like Terrance Wall are the REASON that middle class and small bsiness taxes keep going up, how can they even contemplate voting for him?

This is EXACTLY the sort of thing that got us into our current economic crisis we are in.  Republicans pushed for the elimination of Banking and Investment regulations, spearheaded by then Senator Phil Gramm, in the late 1990's (Senator John McCain's Chief Economic Advisor, during his Presidential campaign in 2008), which led to the fraud and the abuses which caused this economic meltdown.

And when Senator Phil Gramm left the Senate, he became Co-Director of the U.S. Division of UBS Warburg, whose International Banking Division was found to be guilty of intentionally creating fraudulent, secret, off-shore bank accounts for thousands of the extremely wealthy who have been hiding their actual income in these accounts so that they wouldn't have to pay taxes on their income.

Republicans on the floor of Congress argued that these tax cheats should be given the opportunity to "repatriate" the money they had hidden in foreign banks.  They argued that in order to reduce the damage from the economic collapse, they could justify eliminating jail time or financial penalties on the tax cheats - because it could mean bringing back as much as $20 TRILLION DOLLARS, into our economy!  In other words, they wanted to be able to let the crooks who caused the collapse, get off scott free, so that they could bring their money back into the country - AND BUY UP EVERYTHING THAT IS BEING SOLD FOR PENNIES ON THE DOLLAR!  This is a classic "pump and dump" followed by buying up everything cheap because they just caused everyone else to go bankrupt.  (If you don't understand the concept, look up the Rothschilds and how they became wealthy in the first place, by controlling the news, and having inside information through their own passenger pigeon network.  The five Rothschild brothers each had a seat in financial centers throughout Europe, and investment values went up and down based on the news of the day and what it meant to them.  They concocted a scheme to cause the financial markets to crash all over Europe, by sending out false information, claiming that Emperor Napoleon Boneparte had defeated The Duke of Wellington at Waterloo.  It caused investors to sell their holdings in panic, and the Rothschilds quietly bought up everything they could, and became fabulously wealthy while destroying the wealth of everyone else around them, when the truth of the British victory became public.  Even then, their wealth has been estimated to be in the range of hundreds of Billions of dollars, if not Trillions of dollars.)

Not only would these tax cheats be "forgiven", under Republican plans, but they would be given an opportunity to OWN EVERYTHING that they CAUSED TO CRASH IN VALUE!  That would create a monopoly of ownership by ONLY the Extremely Wealthy!

$20 Trillion dollars is almost double the Gross National Product of the United States for an entire year.  That's almost double the value of all goods and services produced in the United States for an entire year, and that money had been hidden in foreign banks for years if not decades!  What could that money done, had it been used by them, to invest in Building the U.S. Infrastructure Up, rather than just watching it disintegrate like a bunch of slumlords!

Given that most of the super rich have investments which are tax free to begin with, and these make up 40% to 80% of their income, don't you think it fair for them to pay taxes on the remaining 20% to 60% of their income which IS taxable?

Most average people have to pay taxes on 100% of their income.  Why do the rich get special treatment, and not have to pay their fair share?

Terrance Wall and others like him are counting on you not paying attention to the real causes of our country's economic decline.

Terrance Wall and others think you are a bunch of suckers, just waiting to be "plucked", because they figure that you won't stand up to him, and won't show up to defeat him in elections that the U.S. Supreme Court has allowed to be heavily skewed in favor of the wealthy, who can now buy as much advertising as they want, and spread as much propaganda as they want, anywhere and anytime they want.

It's up to you.  Stand up to them, and work together to defeat them, or just sit there and wait to be chopped to pieces.

It is very enlightening that Republican Senator Jim DeMint called denying President Obama's Healthcare Reform plan, "his Waterloo".  He's not just simply trying to defeat him on this one issue.  He's trying to turn that defeat into a financial bloodbath, which will create untold riches for those millionaires and billionaires who are in on the scam, while further destroying the economic future of this country.

Don't think it will happen?  It already started with the credit default swaps that paid out 14 to 1, when the smart money bet on our economy to collapse.  They KNEW it was going to collapse, because they helped PUSH IT TOWARDS a collapse.  And they made hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars, if not TRILLIONS of dollars on the SCAM.

And all they have to depend on, to complete their swindle, is the apathy of the American voter, who they are counting on to not show up.

NEW REPORT: Wall Paid No State Income Taxes 12 of Last 15 Years

Wall also refuses to provide documentation for tax-dodging practices

Madison, WI – When multimillionaire, real estate magnate Terrence Wall officially launched his Republican primary campaign for U.S. Senate the week of January 18, news reports revealed that he didn’t pay any state income taxes for four of the last five years.  That same week, a second report surfaced showing Wall didn’t pay any state income taxes for nine of the last 10 years.  Now, a follow-up report by Wispolitics.com has revealed that Wall hasn’t paid any state income taxes for 12 of the last 15 years.

According to the Department of Revenue, Wall only paid state income taxes in 1994, 1996 and 2005.  While Wall has not denied the fact that he has repeatedly paid no state income taxes, his reasons and answers for why he doesn’t pay, and doesn’t owe state income taxes has changed over the last two weeks.

According to the latest Wispolitics report, the Wall campaign was given the opportunity to provide supporting documentation that explains Wall’s tax avoidance but “Wall’s campaign turned down [those] requests…”

“The tale of Terrence Wall’s tax-dodging grows with every passing week,” said Mike Tate, Chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.  “His many explanations as to why he gets away with not paying state income taxes don’t add up - and when given the opportunity to set the record straight, he avoids doing that as well.  Why does Terrence Wall believe there is one set of rules for him, and another for the rest of us?”

Wall’s Tax Trouble Trail

On Friday, the Wisconsin State Journal independently confirmed that Wall had not paid taxes for nine of the last ten years.

Previous news reports indicate Wall has also dodged over a hundred thousand dollars in property taxes by claiming commercial land he owns in the Madison area is for “farming.” The most infamous is a supposed “pumpkin patch” located in the heart of Wall’s Middleton development projects.

As the Capital Times reported, “The law has shifted millions in property taxes from farms to other types of property, including homes and businesses. Wall has tried claim that it’s the same thing as taking a “home mortgage deduction,” but that’s simply not true. Regular Wisconsinites don’t have a loophole that allows them to take a property tax deduction for their backyard vegetable and Mr. Wall doesn’t call a pumpkin patch “home.”

In a recent interview with Wisconsin Eye, Wall claimed to have only four companies registered in Delaware when public records indicate that at least 16 of Wall’s businesses are incorporated in Delaware, not WisconsinThe media has reported that the practice is used “to help corporations avoid paying taxes in other states,” and that it is “an alleged ruse,” where Delaware acts as an “onshore Cayman Islands.”

Governor Doyle Unveils BadgerCare Plus Basic

Plan Provides Self-Funded Coverage Option for Over 20,000 Adults on Waiting List

MADISONGovernor Jim Doyle unveiled a new self-funded health care plan today for adults without dependent children who are on the state health care waiting list. BadgerCare Plus Basic will provide enrollees with limited access to physicians, hospital services, generic prescriptions and catastrophic coverage, and will be paid for entirely through a monthly premium of $130. The Basic plan is not designed to be a long term health coverage plan, but instead will be a bridge plan to keep individuals healthy while they wait for space in the BadgerCare Plus Core Plan.

“With BadgerCare Plus, we’ve made Wisconsin America’s health care leader,” Governor Doyle said.  “Because of BadgerCare, we’ve been able to help people get through this very difficult period without facing serious health consequences or financial ruin. Badger Care Basic will provide access to care for those waiting for a spot in the Core Plan, so they can get care when they are sick and don’t go bankrupt in the process.”

More than 64,000 individuals have enrolled in the state's BadgerCare Plus Core Plan, which suspended new enrollments in mid-October due to budget limits.  Since that time, more than 20,000 individuals are on a waitlist for the program.  The BadgerCare Plus Core Plan provides standard health benefits for low income adults without dependent children.

For a monthly premium of $130, plus reasonable co-pays, a BadgerCare Plus Basic member will have access to catastrophic coverage plus:

  • Up to 10 physician visits each year;
  • Limited hospitalization;
    • Coverage for first inpatient hospital stay and five outpatient hospital visits;
    • Subsequent stays after $7,500 deductible;
  • Up to five emergency room visits each year;
  • Some generic medications; and
  • Badger Rx Gold discount drug membership.

“This will not be a Cadillac health plan,” Governor Doyle said. “In fact, it will be just what the name suggests – it will be basic.  But basic coverage can be the difference between a treatable condition and a trip to the emergency room.  And basic coverage can be the difference between having protection while you try and get your feet back on the ground and going bankrupt trying to pay for medical care.”

To be eligible for coverage, individuals must have incomes below 200 percent of the federal poverty level, have no dependent children, and be included on the waiting list for the BadgerCare Plus Core Plan. To find out more about the Core Plan or to apply for the waitlist, please visit: www.badgercareplus.org.

GOP fundraising letter looks like census form

Bureau gets complaints but Republicans deny any intent to mislead voters

DENVER - The Republican Party is seeking input and money from GOP voters — seemingly under the guise of the U.S. Census Bureau .

"Strengthening our Party for the 2010 elections is going to take a massive grass-roots effort all across America. That is why I have authorized a Census to be conducted of every Congressional District in the country," GOP Chairman Michael Steele says in a letter mailed nationwide.

The letter was sent in plain white envelopes marked "Do Not Destroy, Official Document." Labeled "2010 Congressional District Census," the letter uses a capital "C," the same as the Census Bureau . It also includes a "Census Tracking Code."

The letter makes a plea for money and accompanies a form asking voters to identify their political leanings and issues important to them. There are no disclaimers that participation in the GOP effort is voluntary; participation in the government census is required by law. Failure to participate carries a $5,000 fine, though it is rarely enforced.

Political questions
Sara Sendek, a Republican National Committee spokeswoman, said the letter was not an attempt to mislead voters.

"The document clearly indicates that it is an RNC mailer. The purpose of this document is to gather Republican opinion from across the country and raise a little money," Sendek said.

The letter asks political questions, including, "Do you think the record trillion dollar federal deficit the Democrats are creating with their out-of-control spending is going to have disastrous consequences for our nation?" and, "Do you worry that the Obama administration is committed to greatly expanding the government's role in your life?"

Democrats said the letter was part of a deceptive pattern by Republicans. They said it could mislead voters to believe it's part of the nationwide census being conducted this year. The Census Bureau officially begins its head count this week in rural Alaska; the count for the rest of the nation begins in March.

"When you have no new ideas to offer, all you are left with are the deceptive ideas," said Hari Sevugan, a Democratic National Committee spokesman.

U.S. Census Bureau spokesman Michael Cook says he has received several complaints over the past week from voters who believed the letter was misleading. Cook says the agency is still deciding what steps to take.

Request for probe
Rep. Carolyn Maloney , D-N.Y., asked the Postal Service to investigate complaints about the letters in December and was rebuffed. Ken Currier, manager of government relations for the postal service, said it's clear the document was not from the government. Maloney said she is considering legislation to make it clear such mailings are not allowed.

Among the recipients was Democratic Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, whose letter arrived at the governor's mansion.

"The Republicans have said they want to get a bigger tent," Schweitzer told The Associated Press, "so perhaps they are trying to lure a politician into the Republican Party that can actually balance a budget."

Republican Talking Heads Making A Big Deal Out of Democrats Stepping Down From Office

Senators Dodd and Dorgan have served with
extraordinary distinction and have incredible legislative achievements.

They will be missed and they deserve the country's gratitude for decades
of public service.  Governor Ritter has also presided with distinction
in Colorado.

Retirements are a moving target - but at this stage the
numbers don't lie -- more Republicans than Democrats have decided not to
run for reelection in every category:

o    In the Senate, six Republican Senators have decided not to seek
reelection - while only two Democrats have decided not to.  These six
Republican retirements have created five competitive races in Missouri,
Ohio, New Hampshire, Kentucky and Florida and Democrats have strong
candidates running aggressive campaigns in each.

o    Regarding the two Democratic retirements in the Senate. We believe
very strongly we'll hold on to Connecticut. While Republicans are
putting North Dakota in the win column, everyone should remember that
while North Dakota has been a red state in Presidential politics, all of
its federal office holders - two Senators and one House Member - are
Democrats. The last time a Republican Senator represented North Dakota
it was 1986.

o    In the House, 14 Republicans are opting not to run - while 10
Democrats have made the same decision.

o    And in Governors' races across the country, four Republicans have
decided not to run (Douglass (VT), Rell (CT), Crist (FL), Pawlenty (MN)-
while two Democrats (Doyle (WI) and Ritter (CO))have made the same
decision.  Many others, of course, are term limited out of office.

(Editor's Note: this isn't counting the fact that Sarah Palin resigned from office, as Governor of Alaska, with almost two years left to her term, after spending most of her first - and only term - campaigning with Sen. McCain.  Her reason?  A book signing tour, worth millions of dollars to her.  Even though the book was written by a ghost writer, and not by Palin herself.  And isn't it telling that Sarah Palin would put her name, as author, on a book that she didn't write; and that right-wingers would gobble it up as gospel, in spite of the fact that it is well known that she didn't write it!)

·         History suggests that the 2010 election will be tough for
Democrats. If you look at the past 17 midterm elections, the president's
party has lost an average of 28 seats in the House, and an average 4
seats in the Senate.
·         But Election Day is a long way away, and a lot can happen
between now and then.

·         Democrats are going to field strong candidates and we're
going to wage aggressive campaigns for every seat.

·         Democrats have a very strong case to make to the American
people. In the past 12 months, Democrats have brought our economy back
from the brink, come closer than ever before to enacting
health
insurance reform
and achieved historic accomplishments that will help
the American people and keep us safe.

·         There is a corrosive civil war going on within the
Republican
Party
.  The extreme right wing is chasing moderates - like
Dede
Scozzafava
and FL GOP Chairman Jim Greer - out of the GOP in an attempt
to "purify" the Party at any cost.

o    For example, Republicans face competitive primaries in nearly
every Senate race, including Nevada, California, Connecticut, Kentucky,
Florida, Arkansas, and New Hampshire. Their primary fights are ugly,
bloodletting battles with candidates moving to the right and out of the
mainstream every day.

·         Republicans' plan to reverse course - by going back to the
same failed policies that drove our economy into a ditch- will NOT be a
winning argument with voters.  Remember, failed Republican policies
contributed to the near collapse of our entire economic system,
skyrocketing health care costs and a damaged reputation around the
globe.

·         Even RNC Chairman Michael Steele isn't feeling optimistic.
Yesterday he said Republicans would fail to take back the House, and
admitted that he didn't know if Republicans were actually ready to lead
the country anyway.

Cutting Taxes for Big Business while Cutting the Jobs of Working Americans Is Republicans’ Only Game Plan

State Governments have spent a great deal of money in wooing corporations to locate in their communities and offered them tax advantages which are unavailable to the average citizen. As a result, in Wisconsin, corporate income tax as a share of general fund revenue had declined from a high of around 11% in 1979, to a low of around 5.0% in 2002, with the decreases primarily occurring between 1987 and 2002, when Republican Governors, Tommy Thompson and Scott McCallum were running the state - into the ground.  And as a result, the state has had less available in its budget to subsidize schools and hospitals, which in turn force the schools and hospitals to bill more to the paying customers.

Tommy Thompson's last gift to the rich, was to give them tax rebates, which eliminated the $500 million plus that the State of Wisconsin held after paying outstanding debts.  That also eliminated the "Rainy Day" fund, which was supposed to cover unexpected expenses in times when the economy wasn't able to raise the funds necessary to run the government.  Because those funds were eliminated when the economy was doing well, (under President Clinton), when the economy tanked, (under Dubya), there was nothing available to pay for expenses that started to pile up because the Federal Government wasn't providing funding to the States, after Dubya's tax cuts to the billionaires.

You will recall that when Scott McCallum was Governor, the expenses were so high, that McCallum sold off the Tobacco Settlement (for pennies on the dollar) which was supposed to pay out over 25 or 30 years  (which then Attorney General Jim Doyle, won for the State of Wisconsin in 1998), so that the state could pay for other expenses.  So a long term problem, of paying for health expenses that the State of Wisconsin was going to be saddled with, was left ignored so that McCallum could attempt to balance the budget, which was facing a $3.7 billion deficit.

The problem was the McCallum DIDN'T balance the budget, and gave the Tobacco Settlement away for nothing!  As a result, when Governor Doyle took office, he inherited a $3.5 to $3.6 Billion DEFICIT.

"When Bear Stearns & Co. landed a no-bid contract to underwrite a $147 million stadium bond issue for Miller Park - collecting more than $1.8 million in fees - it prompted criticism of ties between the securities firm and the Thompson administration. Among the firm's executives were Nicholas Hurtgen, a top aide and fund raising advisor to Gov. Tommy Thompson who was hired in 1995 to work for Bear Stearns public finance department in Chicago. Peter Fox, a Bear Stearns executive, was also a key Thompson fund-raiser in Chicago. In 1997, concerns about potential tampering on no-bid state bond issues prompted an audit by the Legislative Audit Bureau. State Rep. Spencer Black, D-Madison, requested the audit after reports linked former Thompson Secretary of Administration James Klauser and campaign contributions from Wall Street bond firms doing business with the state. The audit found Merrill Lynch and Bear Stearns sold more than half of the $440 million in state bonds issued through negotiated agreements."When Bear Stearns & Co. landed a no-bid contract to underwrite a $147 million stadium bond issue for Miller Park - collecting more than $1.8 million in fees - it prompted criticism of ties between the securities firm and the Thompson administration. "To date, 15 governments have converted all or portions of their tobacco settlements. New York City was the first to do so, securitizing $709 million to pay for capital school projects. South Carolina has done the largest deal to date, $934 million, which would be passed by Wisconsin's $1.3 billion plan. Not all the states are expected to convert their settlements, however. In Colorado, for example, the Legislature rejected a proposal to move forward with a securitization." (Tobacco deal's next winner. Hand-picked broker to get $12M fee. By Mike Ivey, The Capital Times (Madison WI), 2001 June 7.) Hurtgen, who faces federal charges in Illinois over hospital kickbacks, is the brother-in-law of Philip Morris lobbyist Phil Prange, whose wife, Alison, is Wisconsin government relations director for the American Cancer Society.

You may also recall that Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker, who is again candidate for Wisconsin Governor, also has his ties to Bear Stearns.

Walker claims that creating jobs is his top priority for the State of Wisconsin should he win election as Governor.  And how exactly would he do that?  During the past 7 years as the Milwaukee County Executive, he has CUT JOBS across the board in order to keep taxes down.  But by cutting jobs, there are fewer people who can, and are, PAYING THOSE TAXES, and so, he creates a cycle of cutting more jobs because there are fewer taxes collected even while there is a greater tax burden on the few remaining people who still have jobs.

And the cycle continues.  We see this every day, with companies cutting hundreds, even thousands of jobs, while continuing to give multi-million-dollar salaries and bonuses to the very people who created this economic mess in the first place.

And the jobs that are being cut are vital to many companies survival.  As they are being cut, few, if anyone left, remain who even understand what the cut workers did, and the remaining workers have to do, not only their jobs, but the jobs of the people whose jobs were cut!

Cutting jobs is a recipe for disaster.  It’s a race to the bottom.  It is a demonstration that those doing the job cutting have no positive outlook, or plans for the future.

All they are doing is throwing people overboard, to “conserve” the limited resources of the life raft we are all sitting in, only to find out that there aren’t enough people left to row the boat.

Fighting Bob reported in July of 2004:

July 15, 2004
Dog ate my homework

Milwaukee County executive and would-be governor Scott Walker had to refer to the 3rd grader's excuse about the dog when asked to provide paperwork to justify selecting Republican Party-favorite Bear Stearns & Co. for county bonding work. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel asked for the records under Wisconsin's open records law.

The $100 million bond refinancing exceeded the maximum fee approved. When MJS reporter Dave Umhoefer asked members of the Walker administration about the details, no one could remember. Yah, sure Ole.

Who is behind the deal? Ah, Tommy Thompson's chief corporate fundraiser Nick Hurtgen, who also raised $25,000 for Walker in Chicago. Hurtgen was the subject of a recent Chicago Sun Times story about shake-downs in Chicago, and the focus of a 1997 MJS four-part series on the influence of money in the Thompson administration.

Hurtgen resigned Friday from Bear Stearns. Oops! Forgot to mention. Linda Seemeyer, the person in charge for Walker, is a long-time friend of Hurtgen's and a co-worker with him in Tommy's Department of Administration. "Seemeyer and Walker had the final say on which firm was recommended."

The state’s total tax share from corporate income tax has risen since 2002 to about 7.1%, but is still far below what it was almost three decades ago.

In Wisconsin from 1996 to 2006, total personal income tax rose 47%, sales taxes rose 52% and homeowner property tax grew 62%. In contrast, corporate income taxes grew only 23%. Keep in mind that the first three taxes are borne primarily by individuals. In addition, between 1978 and 2007 corporate income taxes, based in 2007 dollars dropped, even though national corporate profits more than doubled during that same time period. Personal income on the other hand, during that same time period, in 2007 dollars, has actually stayed about the same or dropped.

In a recent article in State Tax Notes titled “”State Corporate Tax Leakage: $14.5 Billion in 2006” by Martin A. Sullivan in the November 26, 2007 edition, he estimates “state corporate income tax losses due to loop holes and other legal tax avoidance mechanisms on a state-by-state basis…in Wisconsin...in 2006 was $643 million. For the period 1999-2006, it is estimated that Wisconsin’s total corporate tax leakage was $1.828 billion.”

(In other words, in one year, 2007, the Corporate Tax Leakage, exceeded the previous seven years combined, by more than SEVEN TIMES.  Recall also that the Wisconsin State Legislature had been controlled by Republicans until 2008, when Democrats finally won control of both houses.)

And in a recent study based on information available and gathered up to the end of 2007, “Wisconsin’s Revenue Gap – An Analysis of Corporate Tax Avoidance” put out by the Institute for Wisconsin’s Future at www.wisconsinsfuture.org  , they noted that two thirds of Wisconsin Corporations pay ZERO in Corporate Income Taxes. (Their source was the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.)

And listed on Table 3, page 12, they show that Serigraph paid NOTHING in Wisconsin Corporate Income Taxes for 2003 and 2004.

The CEO of Serigraph, John Torinus, regularly writes columns supporting Republican policies and candidates.  No surprise there.

So Scott Walker wants to get elected Governor of Wisconsin, and his only strategy, and his only demonstrated experience, is to cut taxes and eliminate jobs, at the very time that we need to create jobs.

That was Dubya’s game plan, and we all are living through the mess that he created.

There is no difference between what Dubya gave us, and what Scott Walker is offering us.

The “Dubya” in George W. Bush’s name, by the way, is the “W”, which stands for WALKER, his grandmother's maiden name, who was the daughter of George Walker, who owned Union Bank - the largest private bank in the United States at the time, and who also founded the New York Mets.

In 2006 and 2007, Goldman Sachs Group peddled more than $40 billion in securities backed by at least 200,000 risky home mortgages, but never told the buyers it was secretly betting that a sharp drop in U.S. housing prices would send the value of those securities plummeting.

Goldman's sales and its clandestine wagers, completed at the brink of the housing market meltdown, enabled the nation's premier investment bank to pass most of its potential losses to others before a flood of mortgage defaults staggered the U.S. and global economies.

Only later did investors discover that what Goldman had promoted as triple-A rated investments were closer to junk.

Now, pension funds, insurance companies, labor unions and foreign financial institutions that bought those dicey mortgage securities are facing large losses, and a five-month McClatchy investigation has found that Goldman's failure to disclose that it made secret, exotic bets on an imminent housing crash may have violated securities laws.

"The Securities and Exchange Commission should be very interested in any financial company that secretly decides a financial product is a loser and then goes out and actively markets that product or very similar products to unsuspecting customers without disclosing its true opinion," said Laurence Kotlikoff, a Boston University economics professor who's proposed a massive overhaul of the nation's banks. "This is fraud and should be prosecuted."

John Coffee, a Columbia University law professor who served on an advisory committee to the New York Stock Exchange, said that investment banks have wide latitude to manage their assets, and so the legality of Goldman's maneuvers depends on what its executives knew at the time.

"It would look much more damaging," Coffee said, "if it appeared that the firm was dumping these investments because it saw them as toxic waste and virtually worthless."

Lloyd Blankfein, Goldman's chairman and chief executive, declined to be interviewed for this article.

A Goldman spokesman, Michael DuVally, said that the firm decided in December 2006 to reduce its mortgage risks and did so by selling off subprime-related securities and making myriad insurance-like bets, called credit-default swaps, to "hedge" against a housing downturn.

DuVally told McClatchy that Goldman "had no obligation to disclose how it was managing its risk, nor would investors have expected us to do so ... other market participants had access to the same information we did."

For the past year, Goldman has been on the defensive over its Washington connections and the billions in federal bailout funds it received. Scant attention has been paid, however, to how it became the only major Wall Street player to extricate itself from the subprime securities market before the housing bubble burst.

Goldman remains, along with Morgan Stanley, one of two venerable Wall Street investment banks still standing. Their grievously wounded peers Bear Stearns and Merrill Lynch fell into the arms of retail banks, while another, Lehman Brothers, folded.

To piece together Goldman's role in the subprime meltdown, McClatchy reviewed hundreds of documents, SEC filings, copies of secret investment circulars, lawsuits and interviewed numerous people familiar with the firm's activities.

McClatchy's inquiry found that Goldman Sachs:

  • Bought and converted into high-yield bonds tens of thousands of mortgages from subprime lenders that became the subjects of FBI investigations into whether they'd misled borrowers or exaggerated applicants' incomes to justify making hefty loans.
  • Used offshore tax havens to shuffle its mortgage-backed securities to institutions worldwide, including European and Asian banks, often in secret deals run through the Cayman Islands, a British territory in the Caribbean that companies use to bypass U.S. disclosure requirements.
  • Has dispatched lawyers across the country to repossess homes from bankrupt or financially struggling individuals, many of whom lacked sufficient credit or income but got subprime mortgages anyway because Wall Street made it easy for them to qualify.
  • Was buoyed last fall by key federal bailout decisions, at least two of which involved then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, a former Goldman chief executive whose staff at Treasury included several other Goldman alumni.

The firm benefited when Paulson elected not to save rival Lehman Brothers from collapse, and when he organized a massive rescue of tottering global insurer American International Group while in constant telephone contact with Goldman chief Blankfein. With the Federal Reserve Board's blessing, AIG later used $12.9 billion in taxpayers' dollars to pay off every penny it owed Goldman.

These decisions preserved billions of dollars in value for Goldman's executives and shareholders. For example, Blankfein held 1.6 million shares in the company in September 2008, and he could have lost more than $150 million if his firm had gone bankrupt.

With the help of more than $23 billion in direct and indirect federal aid, Goldman appears to have emerged intact from the economic implosion, limiting its subprime losses to $1.5 billion. By repaying $10 billion in direct federal bailout money—a 23 percent taxpayer return that exceeded federal officials' demand—the firm has escaped tough federal limits on 2009 bonuses to executives of firms that received bailout money.

Goldman announced record earnings in July, and the firm is on course to surpass $50 billion in revenue in 2009 and to pay its employees more than $20 billion in year-end bonuses.

The Bluest of the Blue Chips

For decades, Goldman, a bastion of Ivy League graduates that was founded in 1869, has cultivated an elite reputation as home to the best and brightest and a tradition of urging its executives to take turns at public service.

As a result, Goldman has operated a virtual jobs conveyor belt to and from Washington: Paulson, as Treasury secretary, sent tens of billions of taxpayers' dollars to rescue Wall Street in 2008, and former Goldman employees populate some of the most demanding and powerful posts in Washington. Savvy federal regulators have migrated from their Washington jobs to Goldman.

On Oct. 16, a Goldman vice president, Adam Storch, was named managing executive of the SEC's enforcement division.

Goldman's financial panache made its sales pitches irresistible to policymakers and investors alike, and may help explain why so few of them questioned the risky securities that Goldman sold off in a 14-month period that ended in February 2007.

Since the collapse of the economy, however, some of those investors have changed their opinions of Goldman.

Several pension funds, including Mississippi's Public Employees' Retirement System, have filed suits, seeking class-action status, alleging that Goldman and other Wall Street firms negligently made "false and misleading" representations of the bonds' true risks.

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood, whose state has lost $5 million of the $6 million it invested in Goldman's subprime mortgage-backed bonds in 2006, said the state's funds are likely to lose "hundreds of millions of dollars" on those and similar bonds.

Hood assailed the investment banks "who packaged this junk and sold it to unwary investors."

California's huge public employees' retirement system, known as CALPERS, purchased $64.4 million in subprime mortgage-backed bonds from Goldman on March 1, 2007.

While that represented a tiny percentage of the fund's holdings, in July CALPERS listed the bonds' value at $16.6 million, a drop of nearly 75 percent, according to documents obtained through a state public records request.

In May, without admitting wrongdoing, Goldman became the first firm to settle with the Massachusetts attorney general's office as it investigated Wall Street's subprime dealings. The firm agreed to pay $60 million to the state, most of it to reduce mortgage balances for 714 aggrieved homeowners.

Attorney General Martha Coakley, now a candidate to succeed Edward Kennedy in the U.S. Senate, cited the blight from foreclosed homes in Boston and other Massachusetts cities. She said her office focused on investment banks because they provided a market for loans that mortgage lenders "knew or should have known were destined for failure."

New Orleans' public employees' retirement system, an electrical workers union and the New Jersey carpenters union also are suing Goldman and other Wall Street firms over their losses.

The full extent of the losses from Goldman's mortgage securities isn't known, but data obtained by McClatchy show that insurance companies, whose annuities provide income for many retirees, collectively paid $2 billion for Goldman's risky high-yield bonds.

Among the bigger buyers: Ambac Assurance purchased $923 million of Goldman's bonds; the Teachers Insurance and Annuities Association, $141.5 million; New York Life, $96 million; Prudential, $70 million; and Allstate, $40.5 million, according to the data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

In 2007, as early signs of trouble rippled through the housing market, Goldman paid a discounted price of $8.8 million to repurchase subprime mortgage bonds that Prudential had bought for $12 million.

Nearly all the insurers' purchases were made in 2006 and 2007, after mortgage lenders had lifted most traditional lending criteria in favor of loans that required little or no documentation of borrowers' incomes or assets.

While Goldman was far from the biggest player in the risky mortgage securitization business, neither was it small.

From 2001 to 2007, Goldman hawked at least $135 billion in bonds keyed to risky home loans, according to analyses by McClatchy and the industry newsletter Inside Mortgage Finance.

In addition to selling about $39 billion of its own risky mortgage securities in 2006 and 2007, Goldman marketed at least $17 billion more for others.

It also was the lead firm in marketing about $83 billion in complex securities, many of them backed by subprime mortgages, via the Caymans and other offshore sites, according to an analysis of unpublished industry data by Gary Kopff, a securitization expert.

In at least one of these offshore deals, Goldman exaggerated the quality of more than $75 million of risky securities, describing the underlying mortgages as "prime" or "midprime," although in the U.S. they were marketed with lower grades.

Goldman spokesman DuVally said that Moody's, the bond rating firm, gave them higher grades because the borrowers had high credit scores.

Goldman's securities came in two varieties: those tied to subprime mortgages and those backed by a slightly higher grade of loans known as Alt-A's.

Over time, both types of mortgages required homeowners to pay rapidly rising interest rates. Defaults on subprime loans were responsible for last year's housing meltdown. Interest rates on Alt-A loans, which began to rocket upward this year, are causing a new round of defaults.

Goldman has taken multiple steps to put its subprime dealings behind it, including publicly saying that Wall Street firms regret their mistakes. Last winter, the company cancelled a Las Vegas conference, avoiding any images of employees flashing wads of bonus cash at casinos.

More recently, the firm has launched a public relations campaign to answer the criticism of its huge bonuses, Washington connections and federal bailout. In late October, Blankfein argued that Goldman's activities serve "an important social purpose" by channeling pools of money held by pension funds and others to companies and governments around the world.

Knowing When to Fold Them

For investment banks such as Goldman, the trick was knowing when to exit the high-stakes subprime game before getting burned.

New York hedge fund manager John Paulson was one of the first to anticipate disaster. He told Congress that his researchers discovered by early 2006 that many subprime loans covered the homes' entire value, with no down payments, and so he figured that the bonds "would become worthless."

He soon began placing exotic bets—credit-default swaps—against the housing market. His firm, Paulson & Co., booked a $3.7 billion profit when home prices tanked and subprime defaults soared in 2007 and 2008. (He isn't related to Henry Paulson.)

At least as early as 2005, Goldman similarly began using swaps to limit its exposure to risky mortgages, the first of multiple strategies it would employ to reduce its subprime risk.

The company has closely guarded the details of most of its swaps trades, except for $20 billion in widely publicized contracts it purchased from AIG in 2005 and 2006 to cover mortgage defaults or ratings downgrades on subprime-related securities it offered offshore.

In December 2006, after "10 straight days of losses" in Goldman's mortgage business, Chief Financial Officer David Viniar called a meeting of mortgage traders and other key personnel, Goldman spokesman DuVally said.

Shortly after the meeting, he said, it was decided to reduce the firm's mortgage risk by selling off its inventory of bonds and betting against those classes of securities in secretive swaps markets.

DuVally said that at the time, Goldman executives "had no way of knowing how difficult housing or financial market conditions would become."

In early 2007, the firm's mortgage traders also bet heavily against the housing market on a year-old subprime index on a private London swap exchange, said several Wall Street figures familiar with those dealings, who declined to be identified because the transactions were confidential.

The swaps contracts would pay off big, especially those with AIG. When Goldman's securities lost value in 2007 and early 2008, the firm demanded $10 billion, of which AIG reluctantly posted $7.5 billion, Viniar disclosed last spring.

As Goldman's and others' collateral demands grew, AIG suffered an enormous cash squeeze in September 2008, leading to the taxpayer bailout to prevent worldwide losses. Goldman's payout from AIG included more than $8 billion to settle swaps contracts.

DuVally said Goldman has made other bets with hundreds of unidentified counterparties to insure its own subprime risks and to take positions against the housing market for its clients. Until the end of 2006, he said, Goldman was still betting on a strong housing market.

However, Goldman sold off nearly $28 billion of risky mortgage securities it had issued in the U.S. in 2006, including $10 billion on Oct. 6, 2006. The firm unloaded another $11 billion in February 2007, after it had intensified its contrary bets. Goldman also stopped buying risky home mortgages after the December meeting, though DuVally declined to say when.

I've Got a Secret

Despite updating its numerous disclosures to investors in 2007, Goldman never revealed its secret wagers.

Asked whether Goldman's bond sellers knew about the contrary bets, spokesman DuVally said the company's mortgage business "has extensive barriers designed to keep information within its proper confines."

However, Viniar, the Goldman finance chief, approved the securities sales and the simultaneous bets on a housing downturn. Dan Sparks, a Texan who oversaw the firm's mortgage-related swaps trading, also served as the head of Goldman Sachs Mortgage from late 2006 to April 2008, when he abruptly resigned for personal reasons.

The Securities Act of 1933 imposes a special disclosure burden on principal underwriters of securities, which was Goldman's role when it sold about $39 billion of its own risky mortgage-backed securities from March 2006 to February 2007.

The firm maintains that the requirement doesn't apply in this case.

DuVally said the firm sold virtually all its subprime-related securities to Qualified Institutional Buyers, a class of sophisticated investors that are afforded fewer protections than small investors are under federal securities laws. He said Goldman made all the required disclosures about risks.

Whether companies are obliged to inform investors about such contrary trades, or "hedges," is "a very hot issue" in cases winding through the courts, said Frank Partnoy, a University of San Diego law professor who specializes in securities. One issue is how specific companies must be in disclosing potential risks to investors, he said.

Coffee, the Columbia University law professor, said that any potential violations of securities laws would depend on what Goldman executives knew about the risks ahead.

"The critical moment when Goldman would have the highest liability and disclosure obligations is when they are serving as an underwriter on a registered public offering," he said. "If they are at the same time desperately seeking to get out of the field, that kind of bailout does look far more dubious than just trading activities."

Another question is whether, by keeping the trades secret, the company withheld material information that would enable investors to assess Goldman's motives for selling the bonds, said James Cox, a Duke University law professor who also has served on the NYSE advisory panel.

If Goldman had disclosed the contrary bets, he said, "One would have to believe that a rational investor would not only consider Goldman's conduct material, but likely compelling a decision to take a pass on the recommendation to purchase."

Cox said that existing laws, however, don't require sufficient disclosures about trading, and that the government would do well to plug that hole.

In marketing disclosures filed with the SEC regarding each pool of subprime bonds from 2001 to 2007, Goldman listed an array of risk factors that grew over time. Among them was the possibility of a pullback in overheated real estate markets, especially in California and Florida, where the most subprime loans had been made.

Suits filed by the pension funds, however, allege that Goldman made materially false or misleading statements in its public offerings, failing to disclose that many loans were based on inflated appraisals and were bought from firms with poor lending practices.

DuVally said that investors were fully informed of all known risks.

"What's going to happen in the next few years," said San Diego's Partnoy, "is there's going to be a lot of lawsuits and judges will have to decide, should Goldman have disclosed more or not?"

May 2009

from President Barack Obama

My Supreme Court nominee

I am proud to announce my nominee for the next Justice of the United States Supreme Court: Judge Sonia Sotomayor.
This decision affects us all -- and so it must involve us all. I've recorded a special message to personally introduce Judge Sotomayor and explain why I'm so confident she will make an excellent Justice.

Judge Sotomayor has lived the America Dream. Born and raised in a South Bronx housing project, she distinguished herself in academia and then as a hard-charging New York District Attorney.

Judge Sotomayor has gone on to earn bipartisan acclaim as one of America's finest legal minds. As a Supreme Court Justice, she would bring more federal judicial experience to the Supreme Court than any Justice in 100 years. Judge Sotomayor would show fidelity to our Constitution and draw on a common-sense understanding of how the law affects our day-to-day lives.

A nomination for a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land is one of the most important decisions a President can make. And the discussions that follow will be among the most important we have as a nation. You can begin the conversation today by watching this special message and then passing it on:

Thank you,
President Barack Obama

Former Senator Phil Gramm's Problems Just Keep Getting Bigger

Former Senator Phil Gramm ( R ), Senator McCain's presidential campaign co-chair, made a name for himself when he called America "a nation of whiners" and claimed that the Recession was "mental", during McCain's failed campaign.

He has gained further infamy from the recent reports that show that Senator Phil Gramm was largely responsible for leading the charge in dismantling the legislation that had been enacted post-Great Depression in order to avoid a repeat of the economic disaster that we are now seeing today.

But more recent investigations into the activities of the Swiss owned UBS Bank which received bailout funding during the Bush Administration's distribution of funds under Treasury Secretary Paulsen, are showing an even darker side to Phil Gramm's activities.

Phil Gramm is vice-president of a US division of UBS, and his expertise has long been known to be as an advisor to tax cheats on how to hide their money in order to evade taxes.  But his activities had been demonstrated to have compromised National Security efforts in order to hide his clients money, and were made public by investigative journalists Tim Weiner and David Cay Johnston shortly after the September 11 attacks in 2001.  "A NATION CHALLENGED: THE PAPER TRAIL; Roadblocks Cited In Efforts to Trace Bin Laden's Money"
A six-year struggle to uncover Osama bin Laden's financial network failed because American officials did not skillfully use the legal tools they had, did not realize they needed stronger weapons, and faced resistance at home and abroad, officials involved in the effort say.

Federal officials say they have not persuaded foreign banks to open their books to investigators and that in this country, a law that would have allowed the United States to penalize foreign banks that did not cooperate was blocked last year (2000), by a single United States senator.

That single senator was Phil Gramm, then a member of the Senate Banking Committee. Given that al Qaeda could not have launched an operation on the scale of the World Trade Center attacks deprived of finances, tracking down and putting a stop to money laundering by terrorist organizations should have been and should be today a priority in any national security effort. Efforts to put the screws on foreign banks prior to 2001 met with resistance in the Bush White House, but it quickly reversed course after the attacks. Phil Gramm, though single-handedly responsible for blocking the bill, felt no such inkling.

"I was right then and I am right now" in opposing the bill, Mr. Gramm said yesterday..."The way to deal with terrorists is to hunt them down and kill them."

That anyone still believes that is a reliable and practically-feasible method is incredible, but to suggest using force to the exclusion of all other tools is ludicrous.

"We could have starved the organization if we put our minds to it," said Richard Palmer, who gained experience in money laundering as the Central Intelligence Agency's station chief in Moscow during the 1990's. "The government has had the ability to track these accounts for some time."

So instead of tracking the money of known terrorists, the Bush Administration focused their "efforts" on capturing and listening to all of the electronic communications of every American, without any significant results to show for it, in their "War on Terror".

And recent investigations, disclosures and indictments of UBS executives for conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government while managing cross-border bank business add to the list of UBS offenses against U.S. taxpayers, when they received bailout money from the Bush Administration, even though the money was originally supposed to only go to U.S. banks.

On February 19, 2009, Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz and the UBS Bank took the unprecedented step of agreeing to reveal information on 250 tax cheats to the U.S. Government, and pay a $780 million in fines, penalties, interest and restitution for conspiring to create sham accounts to hide from the U.S. Government the assets of U.S. clients.

Approximately 17,000 American clients concealed their UBS accounts from the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. tax-collection agency, hiding assets of roughly $20 billion in total, U.S. officials said.

The New York Times reported that UBS ultimately may disclose the identities of just a few hundred customers. (A recent update to the story states that the U.S. has filed a lawsuit against UBS to divulge the financial records of 52,000 of their clients in connection to the tax evasion investigations.)

According to U.S. officials, when an acquisition in 2000 of a U.S. company brought UBS a host of new American clients, the bank set about to evade new reporting requirements for those clients. To do so, UBS executives helped U.S. taxpayers open new accounts in the names of sham entities.

Prosecutors contend that UBS executives used encrypted software and other counter-surveillance techniques to prevent anyone from detecting that they were actively marketing such Swiss bank secrecy, and tax evasion, to American taxpayers.

The clients, in turn, filed false tax returns that omitted the income they earned in their Swiss accounts, according to the court papers.

Federal officials said they had pulled aside a veil of secrecy that hid a corrupt international banking practice.

"This was not a mere compliance oversight, but rather a knowing crime motivated by greed and disrespect for the law," said Alexander Acosta, U.S. attorney for southern Florida.

IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman warned U.S. taxpayers hiding money overseas that it was time to come clean with the agency.

"People who have hidden unreported income offshore need to get right with their government. They should come forward and take advantage of our voluntary disclosure process," Shulman said.

Democratic Sen. Carl Levin has estimated that abusive tax shelters and hidden offshore accounts cost the U.S. government nearly $100 billion a year in lost tax revenue.

Full story on the UBS turnover of client records to U.S. authorities here.

$100 billion in lost tax revenues every year from tax cheats would put a significant dent in the Federal Deficit, particularly if it had been paid into the Treasury for however many years it had been withheld.  And this is probably much less than the actual revenues lost, given the over $1 Trillion hidden in the Royal Bank of Lichtenstein alone, by 1400 American tax cheats.  You may recall that Lichtenstein is a favorite vacation spot of our own Congressman F. James Sensenbrenner, where he has managed to get yearly free vacations from a business putting on a "conference".

More than five years ago, a whistle-blower IT technician, working for the Royal Bank of Lichtenstein, sent information on the money and the tax cheats to the U.S. government to investigate.  When Republicans controlled Congress, and F. James Sensenbrenner was the chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee, (the committee that launches legal investigations), Republicans and Sensenbrenner did nothing to investigate these tax cheats.  Only after Democrats took control of Congress in 2006, was any investigation launched.  But by then the information was several years old.

Given the fact that the Bush Administration gave these guys Trillions of dollars in tax cuts, you might have thought that it would have been enough.  Apparently, you would have been wrong.  But at least we now know where all that "trickle down" money "trickle went".

Perhaps putting these guys in jail and seizing the money that they hid might help to balance the budget deficit that they helped to create.

With all the noise that Republicans had made about Democratic candidates tax problems' (for appointed positions in Obama's cabinet), they should be screaming at the top of their lungs about these tax cheats.  These guys make the Democrats look like altar boys (in more ways than one, if you think about it).  The money Democrats owed (and paid), wouldn't even qualify as being worth the lint in Republican assisted tax cheats' pockets.

G.A.B. Report Spurs Wisconsin Attorney General

to Finally Concede Voter Records Lawsuit

MADISON, WI – The Wisconsin Government Accountability Board’s (G.A.B.) decision to study data before ordering a large-scale check of old voter records was again validated Thursday by Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen’s move to end a voter records lawsuit.

"The Attorney General’s decision to drop his lawsuit is the right thing to do," said G.A.B. Chairman Judge Michael Brennan. "In October, the court found that the Board’s approach to implementing the Help America Vote Act was correct and lawful."

Last July, the Board began a process for matching voter data with Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicle and Social Security Administration records. The Board then directed its staff to analyze the impact on election administration of conducting retroactive checks.

On Thursday, the G.A.B. reviewed and released a report on the federally required "HAVA Check" procedure. The report reinforces the Board’s previous decision that the matching should not supplant voter eligibility requirements set forth in Wisconsin’s Constitution and statutes. Rather the data matching process is one tool to help improve voter information.

The G.A.B. had earlier determined that its final decision regarding retroactive "HAVA Checks" would be based on a complete analysis of the facts gathered after the November election. The Board had reaffirmed that decision at its meetings in August, October, and December, but the Attorney General proceeded with litigation despite the Board's previous actions and ruling that "HAVA Checks" should not impact a citizen’s right to vote.

"The Attorney General would have been well-served to have also waited for the facts before filing his lawsuit," said Kevin Kennedy, G.A.B. Director and General Counsel.

"The Board’s decision last July and subsequent actions have consistently sought to avoid unfairly disenfranchising voters," Kennedy said. "At the same time, the Board made clear for the last six months that voter data would be cross-checked in accordance with the federal Help America Vote Act."

State of Wisconsin

The statistical report shows that almost 90 percent of voter records match, and that of those that do not, almost all are due to a variation in name or typographical errors.

"We had to understand the facts before jumping to conclusions," G.A.B. Chairman Brennan said. "This report shows the Board and the public data mismatches may occur for a variety of reasons, all of which are unrelated to voter eligibility."

The G.A.B. staff will begin the retroactive "HAVA Check" procedure after the 2009 Spring Election in Wisconsin to continue improving the quality of voter data in the Statewide Voter Registration System. The process should be complete by November.

Message from former Senator Max Cleland:

Sadly, the power of well-funded lies can be hard to overcome with the underfunded truth.

Six years ago, Saxby Chambliss won his Senate seat by running a TV commercial pairing my picture with Osama bin Laden's.

But with Chambliss now in a runoff against Democrat Jim Martin scheduled for December 2 in Georgia, we are closer than ever to Martin winning.  It's all part of finishing the job started with Barack Obama's historic election.

Beyond Georgia, there are still two other outstanding Senate races - in Alaska and Minnesota.  President-elect Obama will need every last legislative vote to change this country.

The DSCC never takes a day off and will keep right on working to make certain the makeup of the Senate fully reflects the will of the people.  But keeping pace with the GOP will take all of us doing our part to raise $100,000 before midnight Friday.  We're all so committed to winning these extra seats that a group of our Democratic senators will triple every gift made before the deadline.

We only have 14 days to get ready for the runoff in Georgia, and even as little as $5 from you can combine with contributions from thousands of others to make a huge difference.  We need you now.

I know first hand that the runoff campaign in Georgia will get nasty.  Chambliss already has his latest round of shocking TV
commercials exploiting the memory of 9/11.  His right-wing buddies are flooding the state with vicious attacks against Democrat Jim Martin, himself a Vietnam veteran and a terrific public servant.

Runoffs are won on turnout, and the DSCC knows how to get out the vote.  Thanks in no small part to your generosity, they have been running proven field campaigns that push our people to the polls in numerous elections across the country.

The DSCC needs your help now to win in Georgia.

Boosting Barack Obama's nascent presidency demands nothing less than our best efforts over these next few weeks.

Please make a contribution right away - even as little as $5 can make an important impact.

I served in the Senate to the best of my ability. I know that Jim Martin will serve with character, dignity and grace.

This is our chance to make it happen, and we all need to do everything we can.
Sincerely,
Max Cleland

2009 INAUGURATION

We have been receiving many inquiries about President-Elect Barack Obama’s Inauguration on January 20, 2009 in Washington , D.C.  The Inauguration is a constitutional function governed by Congress, and is not a function of the Democratic Party.  The Inauguration is planned by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC), and the Balls and Parade will be hosted by Barack Obama’s Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC).

Tickets to the 56th Inaugural Ceremonies will be provided free of charge and distributed through Members of the 111th Congress.  The JCCIC does not provide tickets to the public.  Members of the public interested in attending the Inauguration should contact their Member of Congress or U.S. Senator to request tickets.

You should be aware that no website or other ticket outlet actually has Inaugural swearing-in tickets to sell, regardless of what they may claim.  Tickets will not be distributed to Congressional offices until the week before the Inauguration and will require in-person pick-up.

Sometime soon, President-Elect Obama will appoint the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC), which has the final say on inaugural activities.  It will likely be a few weeks before the PIC is geared up and information starts to flow.  There is no website yet, but there is useful background information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inauguration_Day.

Analysis of the Presidential Election Results

Number of votes cast set record, but voter turnout percentage didn't

       Story Highlights

Report: About 127 million votes cast, shattering 2004 record

Turnout percentage about 61 percent, compared with 1960's 67 percent

Early voting tracker: 31.7 million voted early in at least 30 early voting states

Another expert's estimate projects nearly 131 million Americans voted

Curtis Gans, director of American University's Center for the Study of the American Electorate, said Thursday that percentage turnout was lower because Republicans stayed away from the polls.

Disappointment over Sen. John McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, combined with a perception that the ticket would lose, prompted many would-be Republican voters to ditch the polls on Election Day, Gans said.

"There was real hostility ... amongst moderate Republicans" that McCain would choose the conservative governor, Gans said. "And then there was a gradual perception that the party was going to get whomped."

Nevertheless, between 126.5 million and 128.5 million Americans cast ballots this year, according to a report by the electorate study center. Successful Democratic get-out-the-vote initiatives contributed to that number, which shattered 2004's mark of 122.2 million.

The report surveyed 47 states and the nation's capital. Twenty-two of those states and the District of Columbia reported an increase in voter turnout this year, the center said. GOP turnout increased in only eight of the surveyed states, according to the report.

Only 22% of the Nation's Counties Voted More Republican than in 2004

And where would this hot-bed of Republican activity be?  Try the Appalachian region.

(I guess you CAN fool some of the people all of the time.)

This is the same region which has a strong correlation with poverty, heart disease, obesity, poor education etc...  These are the same characteristics that Republicans claim are associated with Democrats, by the way.

State turns deep shade of blue

Wisconsin's battleground status not lost, some say

In one history-making election, Wisconsin went from the purplest state in the nation to a deep, wide blue.

An analysis of the results showed Barack Obama flipping 32 counties to the Democratic column and racking up the party's largest winning percentage in 40-plus years.

Four years ago, the state was decided for the Democrats by about 11,400 votes, the narrowest margin in the nation. Four years before that, it was even narrower: About 5,700 votes.

Republicans had thought nominee John McCain, with his historic appeal to independent voters, could flip the state to the GOP for the first time since 1984. Instead, Obama topped McCain here 56% to 43%, a somewhat wider margin than the national split of 53% to 46%.

On Tuesday, exit polling showed that 39% of those who voted in the state identified themselves as Democrats, 33% as Republicans and the rest as independents. In 2004, the numbers were reversed: 38% Republican, 35% Democrat and 27% independents.

Some measures of the win:

• Obama's statewide mark of 56% of the vote was the highest winning percentage for a Democrat since Lyndon Johnson reached 62% in 1964. Although Democrats had won the past five presidential elections, they topped 50% in only one: Michael Dukakis in 1988, at 51.4%

• In Dane County, Obama notched about 73% of the vote. That's more than the 71% reached there by Johnson in 1964, and more than any Democrat dating to at least 1920. In Milwaukee County, Obama reached about 66%, on par with Johnson in 1964.

• Obama was able to flip 32 counties won by President Bush in 2004, a map that pretty much followed the 2000 breakdown. By holding all 27 counties won by John Kerry in 2004, Obama ended up with 59 counties, John McCain had 13.

• In Republican strongholds, Obama fared better than Kerry did - a measure of his own strength, but also McCain's weakness. For instance, Bush won 67% of the vote in Waukesha County in 2004, while McCain came in at 63%. He tallied about 10,000 fewer votes than Bush, a pattern repeated in other GOP counties, including Ozaukee and Washington.

• Democrats now control both branches of the state Legislature and every statewide office except attorney general, as well as five of eight congressional seats.

Statewide, turnout was estimated at just under 3 million votes, or about 70% of the voting-age population. That was slightly below 2004, bucking predictions of a record-breaking turnout.

Thus, in many areas, including the city of Milwaukee, Obama improved on the Democratic performance of 2004 by winning over a higher percentage of votes, not by greatly expanding turnout.

Republicans and Democrats alike marveled Wednesday at the breadth of Obama's win, which left only a smattering of counties red.

There were huge margins in Milwaukee and Dane counties, but Obama had an edge in most regions of the state and many demographic groups.

Consider one: Exit polls showed voters ages 18 to 29 made up 22% of all voters, up from 20% in 2004. Of those, 64% backed Obama, compared with 57% for Kerry.

In the city of Milwaukee, the results followed past patterns for Democrats.

In all, 274,463 voters cast ballots, for an 82.8% turnout. Overall, there were 3,072, or 1.1%, fewer ballots cast than the 2004 general election.

• Obama won Milwaukee with 77.8% of the votes, garnering 213,073 votes to McCain's 57,652 votes.

• Obama won 300 of the city's 312 voting wards by an average margin of 520 votes.

• He had a strong showing in the aldermanic districts whose populations are predominantly African-American. He won at least 80% of the vote in the 15th, 6th, 7th, 1st, 2nd and 9th aldermanic districts.

• Obama outperformed McCain in south side districts with sizable Hispanic populations. He won the 12th

Aldermanic District with 82.4% and the 8th Aldermanic District with 75% of the vote.

In many ways, the overall state map reflected the 1996 contest, in which Dole barely contested President Clinton in the state. That should be a caution to anyone ready to move Wisconsin off the battleground list, said Republican strategist Mark Graul.

"I think Barack Obama was particularly suited to Wisconsin," said Graul, who ran Bush's 2004 state campaign. "I think Wisconsin is still one of the purple states. Four years after Bob Dole lost to Bill Clinton, we were one of the closest in the country."

Where Obama Won — ‘08 Election County Analysis

KML for the 2008 Presidental Elections

November 10th, 2008 by Chris Mueller

We have collected and processed election results by county for the 2008 US Presidential elections. KML files depicting the elections are available here:

Wisconsin's voter turnout rate ranks second in nation

Wisconsin had the second-highest voter turnout rate for Tuesday's election, despite the fact that there wasn't a statewide race on the ballot, according to an analysis released Thursday.

In Wisconsin, 70.89% of the voting-age population cast ballots. That's down from 2004, when 73.82% went to the polls. In all, just under 3 million people voted in Wisconsin, compared with just over 3 million four years ago.

Analysts believe the decline, in part, is because the presidential contest was seen as less competitive than in 2004, when a difference of about 11,400 votes separated the candidates.

Minnesota topped Wisconsin, with 75.86% of the voting-age population casting ballots. Voters there also had the hotly contested U.S. Senate race between Republican incumbent Norm Coleman and former comedian-turned-talk show host Al Franken, a Democrat. That race is so tight that officials are recounting ballots by hand.

In 2004, Minnesota also was the only state that outpolled Wisconsin. In that election, 76.75% of voting-age Minnesotans voted.

The study was conducted by American University's Center for the Study of the American Electorate in Washington, D.C. It used vote tallies from The Associated Press. The study's authors used data collected as of Wednesday night.

Nationwide, the percentage of those casting ballots in this election was about the same as in 2004, when a relatively high number of voters cast ballots.

The study's authors estimate 60.7% to 61.7% of voting-age Americans voted. About 60% of the voting-age population cast ballots four years ago.

The study examined turnout in 47 states and the District of Columbia. Alaska, California and Oregon weren't included in the study because large numbers of votes haven't been tallied in those states, the study's authors said.

About 133 million voters turn out for election

Washington - Voters turned out at a rate not seen in at least 40 years, as millions of Americans picked their president early and waited in lines that stretched the lengths of blocks and buildings.

It looks like about 133.3 million people voted for president, based on preliminary results from the country's precincts and projections for absentee ballots, said Michael McDonald of George Mason University. Using his methods, that would give 2008 a 62.5% turnout rate, he said.

Both numbers are estimates and may change as officials count more absentee and provisional ballots.

McDonald suggested the turnout to be about equal to or better than 1964, but not higher than 1960, when John F. Kennedy squeaked out a victory over Richard Nixon. The turnout rate then was 63.8%.

The total voting in 2008 easily outdistanced 2004's 122.3 million, which had been the highest grand total of voters.

Curtis Gans, director of the nonpartisan Committee for the Study of the American Electorate at American University and dean of turnout experts, estimated the total votes to number between 126.5 million and 129 million. That puts the lower end of his estimate near the turnout rate in 2004, he said.

McCain and Bush Administration Republicans (Who are Running From Bush) October Surprise!!

The Politics of a Collapsed Economy Caused by Republican Deregulation, and the Spin by the Republicans to Blame it All On Democrats.

- Republicans create a bailout emergency, demand Democratic support and then don’t support the bailout themselves! -

As shown on Keith Olbermann’s Countdown

September 24, 2008

The politics of waiting.  President Bush is warning Democrats they must not wait but must act now to bail out Wall Street the way he wants to or the economy will be, well, even worse.

But on a Republican blog, one consultant is urging Republicans in tight races to vote against the bailout and attack Democrats who vote for it.

Quote, “God himself couldn‘t have given rank-and-file Republicans a better opportunity to create political space between themselves and the administration.  Let this be the political establishment—Bush Republicans and the White House, plus Democrats in Congress—saddling the taxpayers with hundreds of billions in debt—more than the Iraq war conjured up in a single weekend and enabled by Pelosi, by the way—while principled Republicans say, “No” and go to the country with a stinging indictment of the majority in Congress.

A bailout may be inevitable, but so too can be the political benefit for congressional Republicans if played correctly.”

This open call for Republicans to vote based not on, say, country first, coming from Patrick Ruffini, a former RNC staffer who‘s Web site says, it‘s a joint project with a veteran of the McCain campaign who was suspended this spring for circulating an anti-Obama Web video.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Tonny Fratto claims (on September 23, 2008), that they had a plan to deal with the crisis “drawn up as a contingency plan over previous months and weeks by administration officials.”  But while he acknowledged that lawmakers were only given days to review it, that “this should be enough.”

The White House had a plan, that they created months before while they were publicly denying that there was a financial crisis, but didn’t distribute the plan to, and engage with the Congress of the United States until it became such a “crisis” that they had to act on it in only a few days?

George Bush uses language like “panic”, “crisis”, “rescue”, “becoming more precarious by the day” in his address to the nation, in order to “build up America’s confidence” and force the Democrats into a corner?  And McCain is supposed to “ride in on a white horse” and “save the day”, with his own plan to scuttle the plan that the Bush administration had under wraps for OVER A MONTH, at the eleventh hour, all the while McCain and Republicans were claiming that the “fundamentals of the economy were strong”, until the market collapsed a week ago, dropping $700 Billion in value in one day.

The McCain campaign, claims to be “suspending his campaign” in order to “put country first” and work on legislation to make the bailout a better deal for taxpayers, except that he kept his campaign media appointments (other than “Letterman” where he expected to get skewered), and his campaign sends out talking points to their operatives to tell them “how to run a campaign even while looking like they had suspended their campaign”.  It might have worked, except that one campaign operative made the mistake of forwarding the memo to … THE MEDIA.  And of course, McCain took a different interview with CBS after lying to Letterman about having to get on a plane to Washington because of this economic emergency.  - BUSTED!

More lies to make him appear as if he is putting his country first, while he is in fact putting his own campaign first.  (Came out on Rachel Maddow’s show Sept 24, 2008).

Chris Matthews: “Every time voters switch parties (and vote for the party that isn’t the current administration), they (Republicans), pull a “razzle-dazzle play”.  They hit the re-set button.  They pull a “boot-leg” play when they are up against a stronger team.”

Tell me again:  Who is putting country first?

GO CAMPBELL!  Hold them accountable, whoever they are, and whichever party they represent. Keep the pressure on them!

Campbell Brown continued her streak of keeping politicians' feet to the fire Wednesday night, laying into President Bush and Secretary Paulson over their lack of accountability for the current financial crisis and urging the leaders to allow "scrutiny and debate" over the bailout proposal before Congress.

Brown first played a series of clips of the two over the last six months reassuring Americans that the economy was strong, then said, "today, of course, they have been proven completely wrong....This administration missed the boat on this crisis."

Brown also said she found it "amazing" that the administration was "surprised that Congress and the American people are not marching in lock-stop with them on this." She continued:

"Secretary Paulson, frankly, you didn't help the situation with your initial imperious request to Congress that you be handed this money and that your decisions on what to do with it — your language here — "may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency." Seriously, what were you thinking?"

Finally, continuing her call for transparency, Brown urged leaders to allow "scrutiny and debate" on the bailout plan:

"Now, I know everyone is screaming about how urgent this crisis is, that action must be taken immediately. But I love and live by former Supreme Court Justice Brandeis' great quote: 'Sunshine is the best disinfectant.' What we need is scrutiny and debate. If it has to happen quickly, then do it fast. But without grandstanding, or political posturing. Serious scrutiny and debate — and that should happen whether we are talking about a giant piece of legislation that is going to affect all of our lives, or whether we are talking about our Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates."

An Open Letter to God, from Michael Moore

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Dear God,

The other night, the Rev. James Dobson's ministry asked all believers to pray for a storm on Thursday night so that the Obama acceptance speech outdoors in Denver would have to be cancelled.

I see that You have answered Rev. Dobson's prayers -- except the storm You have sent to earth is not over Denver, but on its way to New Orleans! In fact, You have scheduled it to hit Louisiana at exactly the moment that George W. Bush is to deliver his speech at the Republican National Convention.

Now, heavenly Father, we all know You have a great sense of humor and impeccable timing. To send a hurricane on the third anniversary of the Katrina disaster AND right at the beginning of the Republican Convention was, at first blush, a stroke of divine irony. I don't blame You, I know You're angry that the Republicans tried to blame YOU for Katrina by calling it an "Act of God" -- when the truth was that the hurricane itself caused few casualties in New Orleans. Over a thousand people died because of the mistakes and neglect caused by humans, not You.

Some of us tried to help after Katrina hit, while Bush ate cake with McCain and twiddled his thumbs. I closed my office in New York and sent my entire staff down to New Orleans to help. I asked people on my website to contribute to the relief effort I organized -- and I ended up sending over two million dollars in donations, food, water, and supplies (collected from thousands of fans) to New Orleans while Bush's FEMA ice trucks were still driving around Maine three weeks later.

But this past Thursday night, the Washington Post reported that the Republicans had begun making plans to possibly postpone the convention. The AP had reported that there were no shelters set up in New Orleans for this storm, and that the levee repairs have not been adequate. In other words, as the great Ronald Reagan would say, "There you go again!"

So the last thing John McCain and the Republicans needed was to have a split-screen on TVs across America: one side with Bush and McCain partying in St. Paul, and on the other side of the screen, live footage of their Republican administration screwing up once again while New Orleans drowns.

So, yes, You have scared the Jesus, Mary and Joseph out of them, and more than a few million of your followers tip their hats to You.

But now it appears that You haven't been having just a little fun with Bush & Co. It appears that Hurricane Gustav is truly heading to New Orleans and the Gulf coast. We hear

You, O Lord, loud and clear, just as we did when Rev. Falwell said You made 9/11 happen because of all those gays and abortions. We beseech You, O Merciful One, not to punish us again as Pat Robertson said You did by giving us Katrina because of America's "wholesale slaughter of unborn children." His sentiments were echoed by other Republicans in 2005.

So this is my plea to you: Don't do this to Louisiana again. The Republicans got your message. They are scrambling and doing the best they can to get planes, trains and buses to New Orleans so that everyone can get out. They haven't sent the entire Louisiana National Guard to Iraq this time -- they are already patrolling the city streets. And, in a nod to I don't know what, Bush's head of FEMA has named a man to help manage the federal government's response. His name is W. Michael Moore. I kid you not, heavenly Father.

They have sent a man with both my name AND W's to help save the Gulf Coast.

So please God, let the storm die out at sea. It's done enough damage already. If you do this one favor for me, I promise not to invoke your name again. I'll leave that to the followers of Rev. Dobson and to those gathering this week in St. Paul.

Your faithful servant and former seminarian,

Michael Moore

McCain the Maverick Guttersnipe Brings on the White Girls, the Black Guy and Race

Okay, McCain challenges Obama to go to Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama accepts the challenge and tosses in Europe (tracing a path McCain took earlier this year) and is greeted as a hero.

So the McCain camp panics and starts trashing Obama for being "uppity" (you know, as in "uppity negro" -- a characterization that the Washington Post is helping perpetuate) -- and the right-wing talking points spread across FOX and the GOP radio shill circuit that Obama was acting arrogant, usurping foreign policy, and drawing crowds only because there were opening bands that people were interested in seeing. (We are not making this up.)

Meanwhile, most of the mainstream corporate media -- having nothing better to do and continuing to perpetuate the myth that their role is to report both sides rather than to ascertain the truth -- goes along with actually seriously discussing a bizarre, Rovian (remember that he is an advisor to McCain) series of "attack ads" on Obama, squeezed in before the Olympics in a moment of panic. The panic is due to the fact that, on Obama's overseas tour, foreign leaders -- especially in Iraq -- took a distinctive tilt toward Obama's foreign policy goals. In fact, even Bush and McCain himself (depending on which McCain was speaking) started sidling toward Obama's positions in regards to the never-ending war and European relationships.

Fortunately, some of the corporate press did denounce the ludicrous attack on Obama for not going to a military hospital as bunkum. BuzzFlash stated that the McCain campaign had two headlines prepared for the Germany military hospital trip. If it didn't happen they were going to say, "Obama snubs soldiers." If it did happen, they were going to say, "Obama opportunistically exploits our injured soldiers." It turns out, from reports yesterday, that we were correct. The McCain campaign had prepared two such contradictory message points.

Now, McCain is unleashing what has become known as the Harold Ford "Black Man is Keen on White Women Primal Racism Fear" ad. Why toss tabloid fodder like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton in with Obama? Yes, perhaps to claim that he is all celebrity and no substance, but it was also to subliminally bring the "Harold Ford" factor into play: you can't trust a black man with white women.
It's the most basic racist fear that the Republicans have played on for years: black men threaten white women, which threatens white men, and subconsciously brings the whole issue of race to the forefront of the campaign.

So when Barack Obama joked the other day that the add was made to remind people that he didn't look like the other presidents on dollar bills, McCain's campaign manager, with a straight face and feigned indignation, accused Obama of injecting race into the campaign.

Then McCain himself chimed in, as prompted, to say that he agreed that Obama was bringing race into the campaign and how scurrilous that was.

You see, this is called, according to George Lakoff, keeping the elephant in the room, a most appropriate metaphor considering that dangerous Republican demagogues are on the loose. The more that McCain's campaign can bring up race, while blaming it on Obama, the more that race becomes an issue in the subconscious mind of many voters when they cast their ballots.

Racism isn't rational. Obama is monogamous; trust us on this one. So what threat, even in a bizarre hypothetical, would Obama pose to white women? Why none, but we are talking about exploiting the deep racial fears that hide in the deplorable recesses of the American soul going back to slavery, Reconstruction, and the rise of the modern Republican Party. This fear led to many a lynching if a black man so much as glanced sideways at a comely Southern white woman.

McCain, at this point, should be disqualified as a candidate. He has made so many gaffes that if elected it would be like having Captain Crunch run the nation, along with his financially and morally compromised Phil Gramm, who will pick the pockets of all those male racists out there who shoot up "liberal" churches because they blame progressives for their lot in life, when it's the Republicans who have economically fleeced them.

McCain ought to be confined to a neo-Confederacy assisted living center and finally leave his wife in peace.

To call the Spears, Hilton, Obama ad a new low in politics is to underestimate McCain's ability to sink lower than David Duke in Hell.
White male Americans don't need to protect their wives from Barack Obama. They need to protect the United States and their wallets from John McCain.

The guy is an immoral liar, who long ago lost his right to be called a hero.

Now, he's just a rabid junkyard dog with moral dementia.

Obama Doesn't Sweat. He should.

by Greg Palast

In swing-state Colorado, the Republican Secretary of State conducted the biggest purge of voters in history, dumping a fifth of all registrations. Guess their color. In swing-state Florida, the state is refusing to accept about 85,000 new registrations from voter drives - overwhelming Black voters.

In swing state New Mexico, HALF of the Democrats of Mora, a dirt poor and overwhelmingly Hispanic county, found their registrations disappeared this year, courtesy of a Republican voting contractor.

In swing states Ohio and Nevada, new federal law is knocking out tens of thousands of voters who lost their homes to foreclosure.

My investigations partner spoke directly to Barack Obama about it. (When your partner is Robert F. Kennedy Jr., candidates take your phone call.) The cool, cool Senator Obama told Kennedy he was "concerned" about the integrity of the vote in the Southwest in particular.

He's concerned. I'm sweating.

It's time SOMEBODY raised the alarm about these missing voters; not to save Obama's candidacy – journalists should stay the heck away from partisan endorsements - but raise the alarm to save our sick democracy.

And that somebody is YOU. Joining with US, the Palast investigative team. Here's how:

We have been offered an astonishing opportunity to place the Kennedy-Palast investigative findings on a national, prime-time, major-network television broadcast. Plus, separately, we have an extraordinary offer to create a series of reports for national network radio.

But guess what? The networks will NOT PAY for our public service reports. We have to raise the start-up funds in the next two weeks to film it, record it and get it on the airwaves.

WE need YOU to fund the reports, DISSEMINATE the findings as we post the print, audio and video on the web– and ACT on it.

So, for only the second time this year, I am asking each one of you to make a tax deductible donation to the non-profit, non-partisan Palast Investigative Fund of $500, $150 or $100.

Progressives have complained for years of no opportunity to get the hard, cold sweaty truth on the air. Well, put your money where your heart and soul is.

Donate at least $500, I'll send you every book I've written and every film, signed. Send $150 and I'll send you as a gift, a copy of John Ennis' film Free For All, Armed Madhouse, The Election Files and a copy of Live from the Armed Madhouse all signed. Donate $100, and I’ll send you 3 copies, one signed to you, of "The Elections Files," (Watch the trailer here) the best of our BBC/Democracy Now films – including special never-broadcast interviews with Kennedy(Watch a clip) and fired prosecutor David Iglesias (Watch a clip).

I know you’re ponying up for your favorite candidates. But what’s the point of winning folks' votes IF NO ONE COUNTS THEM?

Please make your donation – today. No corporation, no big foundation, is going to take on this emergency in our democracy. The election’s about to be stolen – for a third time. SO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

Donate today (for $1,000 minimum, we’ll list you as a Producer of our next DVD, in gratitude). Why? Because the only way to get the vote-chewing cockroaches out of the voting machinery is to turn on the lights – tell the truth on them. On prime time.

After our team busted the story of Katherine Harris' attack on innocent Black voters as "felons," the NAACP sued and won back their rights. The truth CAN make the difference. Yes, we can. Indeed, we HAVE.

Think all votes should be counted in America? Then YOU stand up and be counted. Don’t expect networks or commercial sponsors to pay for your democracy. Feed the truth, donate $100 right now and pass on a copy of the Elections Files to your dippy cousin who thinks Kerry lost fair and square.

Donations from our prior and only request already paid for some of our filming in the Southwest. Don't let this story be swept under the border.

SENATOR JAUCH: MCCAIN RECORD DOESN’T BACK UP RHETORIC ON GREAT LAKES COMPACT -- UNLIKE MCCAIN, OBAMA HAS VOTED CONSISTENTLY TO PRESERVE THE GREAT LAKES - 7/30/2008

MADISON – With Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle testifying today at the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the Great Lakes Compact, Wisconsin State Senator Bob Jauch – who represents the entire Wisconsin shoreline of Lake Superior and helped craft the legislation – praised Governor Doyle’s work on the issue, but said Wisconsin also needs a President who will fight to preserve the Great Lakes. While both candidates have vocalized support for the bill, only U.S. Senator Barack Obama has backed up his words with a consistent record of support for Great Lakes preservation.

“Governor Doyle, Senator Feingold, and so many of our dedicated public servants have worked tirelessly to preserve the Great Lakes, and for that, the people of Wisconsin owe them our thanks,” Senator Jauch said. “But to truly ensure the preservation of the Great Lakes, we also need a steadfast ally in the White House. Barack Obama will be that ally.”

U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) presided over today’s hearing on the interstate compact. If passed by Congress, the bill would promote water conservation and prevent waters from being diverted to different regions – threats that have already caused damage to the Great Lakes.

Barack Obama has been a consistent advocate for preservation of the Great Lakes region, including co-sponsoring two bills to help prevent the spread of invasive species. In contrast, Senator John McCain has repeatedly opposed measures to preserve the Great Lakes, including cleanup initiatives and projects to prevent sediment pollution. In addition, McCain’s newfound support of offshore drilling for natural gas raises questions about whether the Great Lakes would be exposed to irreparable damage.

“It’s not enough for Senator McCain to say he supports the Great Lakes as a candidate, when his public record doesn’t match those words,” Senator Jauch said. “Time and again, John McCain’s record has been harmful to the Great Lakes, rather than voting to prevent pollution and ecological damage. His record certainly suggests that he was not looking out for the good of the region until he was a candidate and that the Great Lakes would not be a priority for him as President.”

BACKGROUND ON SENATOR MCCAIN’S INCONSISTENT RECORD OF SUPPORT FOR GREAT LAKES PRESERVATION:

MCCAIN OPPOSED IMPORTANT GREAT LAKES PROJECTS
McCain Opposed Legislation That Included Funding To Prevent Invasive Specie s In The Great Lakes

2007: McCain Strongly Opposed The WRDA of 2007. “Mr. President, I would like to express my strong opposition to the Conference Report on the Water Resources Development Act of 2007.” [Senator John McCain Press Release on the WRDA Conference Report, 9/24/07]

2007: The WRDA Provided Funding To Complete The Asian Carp Barrier Project To Prevent Invasive Species From Reaching The Great Lakes. A press release from Sen. Durbin’s office stated: “The United States Senate today approved the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). The bill includes a provision authored by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) that will authorize the use of federal funds to allow the Army Corps of Engineers to complete the Asian Carp Barrier project. This barrier will prevent the spread of invasive species, including Asian Carp, between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Basins through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. "The Asian Carp t hreatens both the native fish and natural wildlife of the lake and in turn, the economy of the entire Great Lakes region," said Durbin. "Currently, this invasive species threatens a $4.1 billion sport and commercial fishing industry in the Great Lakes. The bill passed today recognizes the threat of the Asian Carp by authorizing the permanent operation of the barrier system to prevent these harmful fish from entering the waters of the Great Lakes."” [HR 1495, PL 110-114, Vote 406, Passed 79-14,11/8/07, Sen. Dick Durbin Press Release, 5/16/07]

2006: Obama And Durbin Successfully Secured Funding For Temporary Barriers To Prevent Entry Of Invasive Species. A press release from Sen. Dick Durbin stated: “In June 2006, Durbin and Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) worked to successfully secure $400,000 to operate the barriers that prevent invasive species from entering the Great Lakes. Twenty-eight other Great Lakes House Members joined Congresswoman Judy Biggert (R-IL) in sending a letter to House appropriators in support of this effort. The funding was included to pay for the operation of Barrier I, a temporary barrier that keeps the invasive species out of the Illinois River and Lake Michigan by emitting an ele ctric current that deters the carp from passing through.” [Sen. Dick Durbin Press Release, 5/16/07]

Obama Cosponsored Two Bills That Would Have Made The Invasive Species Barrier In the Great Lakes Permanent. Requires the Assistant Sec retary of the Army (Civil Works) to upgrade and make permanent the existing Chicago sanitary and ship canal dispersal barrier in Chicago, Illinois, constructed as a demonstration project to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species in U.S. waterways. Directs the Secretary of the department in which the Coast Guard is operating to construct, at full Federal expense, the Chicago sanitary and ship canal dispersal barrier authorized by the Water Resources Development Act of 1986. [109th S. 770, introduced 4/13/05; 110th S. 791, introduced 3/7/2007]

McCain Opposed Great Lakes Cleanup

McCain Voted Against Great Lakes Cleanup Initiatives. In 1995, McCain voted for the GOP’s Regulatory Reform bill (S 343), which would have delayed efforts to clean up the Great Lakes by requiring rigid risk assessment and cost benefit analysis, and by giving the poll uting industries unlimited opportunities to delay the implementation of rules that meet those tests through petitions for review and litigation. Polluting industries would also have been able to have their own scientists on the peer review panels that must approve the regulations. [S 343, Vote 311, 7/18/95; S 343, Vote 315, 7/20/95]

Obama Cosponsored A Bill To Clean Up Contaminated Expanses And Aid Habitat Restoration In The Great Lakes. A press release from Sen. Levin reported: “Senator Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Senator George Voinovich, R-Ohio, co-chairmen of the Senate Great Lakes Task Force, today introduced the bipartisan Great Lakes Legacy Act of 2008 to expand on legislation passed six years ago. The bill aims to clean up contaminated expanses in the Great Lakes known as “Areas of Concern” within 10 years…The Great Lakes Legacy Act of 2008 focuses on Areas of Concern in the Gre at Lakes. Forty-three Areas of Concern have been identified in the Great Lakes, 13 of which are in Michigan and four in Ohio. These sites do not meet the water quality goals established by the United States and Canada in the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, mainly because of contaminated sediments from historic industrial activity. This contamination results in several detrimental consequences including fish advisories, degradation of fish and wildlife populations, taste and odor problems with drinking water, beach closures, and bird and animal deformities or reproductive problems. The Great Lakes Legacy Act of 2008 would authorize $150 million annually for clean up of the Areas of Concern within 10 years. The legislation gives the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) greater flexibility to manage funds by allowing the EPA to distribute funds directly to contractors and would provide relief to states from burdensome requirements. Under this bill, eligible projects would be expanded to include habitat restoration.” [110th S. 2994, introduced 5/8/08; Sen. Levin Press Release, 5/8/08]

McCain Opposed Prevention Of Sediment Pollution In The Great Lakes

McCain Opposed, Obama Supported Projects To Prevent Sediment Pollution In The Great Lakes Which Threatens Vegetation, Wildlife And Makes Water Treatment More Expensive. A press release from the Great Lakes Commission stated: “The Great Lakes Basin Program – which gained renewed support in the Farm Bill – is administered by the Great Lakes Commission, with funding provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service. The Basin Program supports improved erosion and sediment control and sound landuse practices through demonstration grants, technical assistance and information/education projects. Grant recipients include conservation districts and other nonfederal units of government, nonprofit organizations and academic institutions in all eight states of the Great Lakes basin. Over the past 17 years, the Basin Program has supported nearly 400 projects and invested almost $12 million in water quality improvement efforts. These projects have prevented an estimated 250,000 tons of sediment and 900,000 pounds of phosphorus from entering the Great Lakes and tributaries. Sediment pollution covers spawning beds, suffocates aquatic vegetation habitat, and increases the cost of treating potable water and maintaining drainage infrastructure. Phosphorus pollution can lead to excess growth of plants and algae and rob lakes and river s of oxygen.” [Great Lakes Commission Press Release, 5/28/08; 110th HR 2419, Passed 79-14: R 37-11; D 40-3 (ND 36-3, SD 4-0); I 2-0]

McCain Opposed Projects To Support Great Lakes Commerce

McCain Opposed Important Projects To Relieve The Dredging Backlog In The Great Lakes Waterway Which Is Necessary For Hundreds Of Millions Of Transported Goods. A press release regarding the Water Resources Development Act of 2008 from Sen. Levin stated: “Great Lakes Navigation and Protection Directs the Army Corps to expedite the operation and maintenance, including dredging, of the Great Lakes commercial navigation channels and infrastructure. This provision aims to address the very serious dredging backlog in the Great Lakes, which has been exacerbated by historic low water levels. The backlog has resulted in ships having to carry reduced loads, freighters getting stuck in channels, and some shipments that have ceased altogether. Every year, hundreds of millions of tons of goods are transported through the Great Lakes waterways, and communities throughout the Great Lakes are economically ti ed to waterborne commerce. Dredging to the needed depths and maintaining other navigational features of the system are critical. Also directs the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, in coordination with the Corps and other federal agencies, to carry out a pilot project to control and prevent further spreading of viral hemorrhagic septicemia in the Great Lakes.” [HR 1495, PL 110-114, Vote 406, Passed 79-14,11/8/07; Sen. Levin Press Release, 11/08/07]

Bush administration projects record '09 deficit
Deficit for next year to hit $482 billion amid sagging economy

WASHINGTON - The next president will inherit a record budget deficit of $482 billion, according to a new Bush administration estimate released Monday.
The administration said the deficit was being driven to an all-time high by the sagging economy and the stimulus payments being made to 130 million households in an effort to keep the country from falling into a deep recession. But the numbers could go even higher if the economy performs worse than the White House predicts.
The budget office predicts the economy will grow at a rate of 1.6 percent this year and will rebound to a 2.2 percent growth rate next year. That’s a half percentage point more than predicted by the widely cited “blue chip” consensus of leading economists. The administration also sees inflation averaging 3.8 percent this year, but easing to 2.3 percent next year — better than the 3.0 percent seen by the blue chip panel.
“The nation’s economy has continued to expand and remains fundamentally resilient,” said the budget office report.
A $482 billion deficit, however, would easily surpass the record deficit of $413 billion set in 2004.
The deficit numbers for 2008 and 2009 represent about 3 percent of the size of the economy, which is the measure seen as most relevant by economists. By that measure, the 2008 and 2009 deficits would be smaller than the deficits of the 1980s and early 1990s, when Congress and earlier administrations cobbled together politically painful deficit-reduction packages.
The administration actually underestimates the deficit, however, since it leaves out about $80 billion in war costs. In a break from tradition — and in violation of new mandates from Congress — the White House did not include its full estimate of war costs.
The White House in February had forecast that next year’s deficit would be $407 billion, which puts the increase in the projections at $72 billion.
Figures for the 2008 budget year ending Sept. 30 will actually drop from an earlier projection of $410 billion to $389 billion, the report said.
The White House still projects that the budget will reach a surplus by 2012, helped by revenues boosted by optimistic economic projections of economic growth.
Still, the new figures are so eye-popping in dollar terms that it may restrain the appetite of the next president to add to it with expensive spending programs or new tax cuts. In fact, pressure may build to allow some tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 to expire as scheduled at the end of 2010, with Congress also feeling pressure to curb spending growth.

Obama’s campaign used the new numbers to attack McCain for embracing Bush’s tax cuts. Obama, said campaign policy director Jason Furman, “will restore balance and fairness to our economy by cutting wasteful spending, shutting corporate loopholes and tax havens, and rolling back the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, while making health care affordable and putting a middle class tax cut in the pocket of 95 percent of workers and their families.”
The deficit for 2007 totaled $161.5 billion, which represented the lowest amount of red ink since an imbalance of $159 billion in 2002. The 2002 performance marked the first budget deficit after four consecutive years of budget surpluses.

That stretch of budget surpluses represented a period when the country’s finances had been bolstered by a 10-year period of uninterrupted economic growth, the longest period of expansion in U.S. history.
In his first year in office, helped considerably by projections of continuing surpluses, Bush drove through a 10-year, $1.35 trillion package of tax cuts.
However, the country fell into a recession in March 2001 and government spending to fight the war on terrorism contributed to pushing the deficit to a record in dollar terms in 2004.
House Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt, D-S.C., said the new deficit figure confirms “the dismal legacy of the Bush administration: under its policies, the largest surpluses in history have been converted into the largest deficits in history.
(Note that the earlier deficits in the 1980's and early 1990's referred to in this article came during Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush's administrations - both Republicans.  So, three consecutive Republican Presidential Administrations have managed to totally screw up our economy and put us into record deficits, putting our taxpayers further into debt.  Does anyone out there really want to make it FOUR with McCain?

(This doesn't include the Clinton DEMOCRATIC Presidency in between Bush 1 and Bush 2, during which Clinton actually erased the deficits, gave us the largest surpluses in history, and made our country financially secure.)

Note also, that this report again confirms that the first recession under George W. Bush started in March 2001, which repudiates Bush's repeated claims that the recession had started the previous fall, under Clinton.)

Justice Department indicts Sen. Ted Stevens
The long-serving Alaska legislator is accused of making false statements
WASHINGTON - Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator and a figure in Alaska politics since before statehood, has been indicted on seven counts of falsely reporting hundreds of thousands of dollars in services he received from a company that helped renovate his home.

Stevens, 84, has been dogged by a federal investigation into whether he pushed for fishing legislation that also benefited his son, an Alaska lobbyist.
From May 1999 to August 2007, prosecutors said Stevens concealed "his continuing receipt of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of things of value from a private corporation."

Home expenses, gifts probed

The indictment released Tuesday said the items included: home improvements to his vacation home in Alaska, including a new first floor, garage, wraparound deck, plumbing, electrical wiring; as well as car exchanges, a Viking gas grill, furniture and tools.
Justice Department officials held a news conference later Tuesday to discuss the charges.
Messages left Tuesday at both Stevens' Senate office in Washington and his campaign office in Anchorage were not immediately returned.

Prosecutors said Stevens "took multiple steps to continue" receiving things from oil services company VECO Corp., and its founder, Bill Allen.
At the time, the indictment says, Allen and other VECO employees were soliciting Stevens for "multiple official actions...knowing that Stevens could and did use his official position and his office on behalf of VECO during that same time period."
VECO's requests included funding and other aid for the oil services company's projects and partnerships in Pakistan and Russia.
It also included federal grants from several agencies — as well as help in building a national gas pipeline in Alaska's North Slope Region, according to the indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Washington.

Seven other Alaska politicians had previously been indicted in the FBI’s long-running investigation of political corruption, including state Sen. John Cowdery, chairman of the influential Legislative Council Committee. Cowdery resigned last week.
Stevens acknowledged in June 2007 that he was under investigation.
A month later, FBI agents raided his house in Girdwood, a suburb of Anchorage, after a wealthy Alaska businessman told prosecutors that he paid his employees to renovate the house.
Per Republican Senate caucus rules, if a member is indicted, he or she can no longer serve as chairman or ranking member of a committee.
Stevens is a ranking member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.
NBC affiliate KTUU of Anchorage contributed to this report.

Economy hitting the elderly especially hard
Bankruptcies soar as retirees, agencies struggle to keep up with rising costs

Elderly Americans are filing for bankruptcy in record numbers, according to a study by AARP, formerly the American Association of Retired Persons. At the same time, support is drying up from meal, transportation and other home assistance agencies that can’t pay their own bills.
“There's no question that the downturn in the economy is dramatically impacting those at the doorstep of retirement and those that have already decided to retire,” said Mark Kitchens, a senior vice president of AARP.

Soaring bankruptcy among the elderly

The numbers are stark. Of the more than 1 million Americans who filed for bankruptcy last year, nearly a quarter were 55 and up, AARP found. Bankruptcy filings among those ages 75 to 84 skyrocketed by 433 percent from 1991 to 2007.
Halfway into 2008, workers at agencies that serve the elderly say the problem is only getting worse.

“We are getting more and more calls from seniors looking for jobs, every day,” said Peggy Clarke, director of a job bank run by Positive Maturity, a senior agency in Birmingham, Ala.
“Plus, their age is higher every time,” Clarke said. “We’re talking about people in their 80s who are saying that they have to go back to work, even if it’s part-time.”
At a bankruptcy hotline operated by Utah Legal Services, a nonprofit support agency, pleas for help pour in from seniors in debt, intimidated by persistent calls from bill collectors.
“They’re calling because they want to file for bankruptcy,” said Sylvia Bosen, a spokeswoman for the agency. “Some of them think they may go to jail.”

Among Americans 50 and older:
— 45 percent say food prices have caused a hardship for their budgets
— 39 percent think at least some foods will have to be rationed within a year
— 47 percent are shopping for food less frequently
— 41 percent are eating less meat
— 18 percent have started eliminating some meals

Services strain to keep up
Only 21 percent of employers offer supplemental health coverage to retired employees enrolled in Medicare, according to the AFL-CIO, making government and private senior service agencies crucial to keeping America’s elderly clothed, housed and fed.
But those agencies are buckling, hit by the same double-whammy of higher costs for food and fuel.
More than 2,000 Meals on Wheels programs nationwide have waiting lists because it is too expensive to deliver to all who need it.

Retirement? What retirement?
Retirement plans and government benefits must provide for average life expectancies reaching 20 years longer than they did in the 1930s.

But inflation and stock plunges are eating away at retirement accounts, while Social Security is shrinking — the 2.3 percent increase in benefits announced in January was the smallest in four years. By comparison, consumer prices rose more than twice as much over the past year, the Labor Department said last week.
More and more able-bodied seniors are simply not retiring. They can’t afford it.
In a survey conducted in April, Woelfel Research of Dunn Loring, Va., found that 27 percent of Americans 45 or older expected to delay retirement because of the economic downturn. One of them is John Looney of Denver.
“I have been saving every year for some 40 years now trying to get ready for this moment where I might be able to have a little more time for family, for friends,” Looney said.
Now he expects to have to work for at least five more years.
If anyone should know, it’s John Looney. He works for AARP.

DOJ: Former aide broke law in hiring scandal
Politics influenced hiring of career prosecutors, report says

DOJ: Ex-aide broke law
July 27: The Justice Department releases a report blaming a top aide to former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales for illegally using politics to determine who was hired at the department. NBC's Pete Williams reports.
MSNBC

updated 10:03 a.m. CT, Mon., July. 28, 2008
WASHINGTON - A new Justice Department report concludes that politics illegally influenced the hiring of career prosecutors and immigration judges, and largely lays the blame on top aides to former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
Monday's report singles out the department's former White House liaison, Monica Goodling, for violating federal law and Justice Department policy by discriminating against job applicants who weren't Republican or conservative loyalists.
The 140-page report does not indicate whether Goodling or former Gonzales chief of staff Kyle Sampson could face any charges. None of those involved in the discriminatory hiring still work at Justice, meaning they will avoid any department penalties.
However, Justice investigators said that Goodling, at least, may lose her license to practice law as a result of the findings.
Gonzales was largely unaware of the hiring decisions by two of his most trusted aides. The report said his aides' decisions weeded out Democrats and that Goodling also rejected at least one lesbian job applicant.
The report marks the culmination of a yearlong investigation by Justice's Office of Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility into whether Republican politics were driving hiring polices at the nation's premier law enforcement agency that is expected to be above partisan politics.

Gonzales aide Goodling resigns
The investigation is one of several that examine accusations of White House political meddling within the Justice Department. Those accusations were initially driven by the firings of nine U.S. attorneys in late 2006 and culminated with Gonzales' resignation under fire as attorney general last September.

You've probably seen the commercial recently, calling for people to call their members of the House of Representatives to vote in favor of reauthorizing the Surveillance Bill which supposedly protects us against Al Qaida plotting against us.  It claims that we are unprotected against terrorists without this bill in place.

What some of you might recognize, is that the voice of many beer commercials, which was also the voice of many Anti-Democratic smears during the 2004 Presidential campaigns, is the same voice behind this commercial.

The name of the organization funding the commercial, implying itself to be a Pro-Democracy group (Defense of Democracies), is anything but that.

Recent investigative reports, as well as a Bush Administration official, have admitted that the only reason to pass this bill, is to hold harmless, the telecom industry from lawsuits that are bound to be filed against them because of the illegal, unConstitutional nature of these illegal wiretaps, for any actions which they have taken in the past, or which they might take in the future.  (That last piece was based on Bush's own statement.)

There is no danger of any Al Qaida plots being missed, (as a result of the wiretaps no longer being in place - which is what the commercial implies), because the telecoms have all reported that they are continuing to provide this service to the Bush Administration and your government funded intelligence services, (at taxpayer expense), in spite of the fact that the legislation has not been reauthorized.

The only reason for the push for the reauthorization of this bill is to protect the telecoms from being sued for illegal activities.  PERIOD.

Keith Olbermann - MSNBC reported on February 28th, that Republicans are puzzled that they aren't getting large campaign donations from...THE TELECOM INDUSTRY!

Puzzled?  Olbermann explains it by saying that the Telecom industry might possibly be upset with the Republicans by being forced into this situation in the first place, by the Republicans.

McCain Flip Flops on Waterboarding

He was staunchly against waterboarding in November, because it exposed our troops to torture, and it was against “American Values” then…

That was before he was for waterboarding today, in order to get Romney’s endorsement.

The Army field manual bans waterboarding and the recent bill would enforce that ban, but McCain voted against the bill which would have enforced that ban.

Senator Russ Feingold announces intent to submit a censure resolution against Bush, Cheney and others in the Bush Administration.

Hold The Administration Accountable

Censure Resolutions

Millions of Americans agree that the time has come to demand accountability from the President and his administration.

The two censure resolutions that Senator Feingold proposed will hold the President, Vice President, and the administration responsible for the destructive path down which they've taken our country.

The White House can no longer be allowed to shred the constitution, and thumb their nose at the American people.

Over the recent months and years, we've learned that this President, and his administration, have used mistruths, spin, lofty-rhetoric, hyped-up intelligence reports, and scare tactics to drag this country into a war that can only be described as the worst foreign policy mistake in our nation's history.
In addition, the administration, in an attempt to justify this mistake, has repeatedly distorted the situation on the ground in Iraq.

And the President continues to keep our country bogged down in Iraq – in a civil war that has no military solution and actually hurts America's ability to fight those who attacked us on September 11th, 2001.

What's equally dangerous is the blatant disregard President Bush has had for the rule of law on which our country was founded.

Future generations must understand that at a time in our nation's history when the very foundation of our government was threatened, Congress was not silent.
Regardless of whether you are for or against the impeachment of the President, Vice President, and other administration officials, Senator Feingold's censure resolution is a powerful way to hold this administration accountable.

Congress needs to stand up and condemn this administration for their actions.
Americans are demanding accountability and censure is a step in that direction.
It's time for the President and his administration to return to the law.

The focus of Senator Feingold's first censure resolution intends to condemn the President, Vice President, and the administration for getting the United States into the Iraq war under false pretenses. Possibly including:

• The assertion that Iraq was linked to al-Qaeda;
• The claim that Iraq harbored weapons of mass destruction that threatened the U.S.;
• The knowingly false declaration in the 2003 State of the Union Address that Saddam Hussein tried to purchase yellow-cake uranium from Niger;
• Insufficient war planning;
• The failure to protect troops and preserve the military;
• Fiscal mismanagement of the war.

The focus of Senator Feingold’s second censure resolution will likely focus on the Bush Administration’s relentless refusal to abide by the rule of law. Possibly including:

• The implementation of the illegal, domestic wiretapping program and for misleading the American people regarding the legality of the warrentless program;
• The use of military commissions;
• Redefining torture;
• The politicization of the U.S. Attorney scandal;
• The refusal to comply with congressional subpoenas.

Senator Feingold is seeking input from folks in Wisconsin and across the country on what should be in these final resolutions. You can let him know that you're on board with his demand for accountability, and give him feedback, here: http://www.progressivepatriotsfund.com/input.html .

Thank GOD that Senator Feingold is continuing to speak out against Bush, Cheney and their crooked administration, and take some action against them.  (I'm still waiting for Senator Reid and Speaker Pelosi to step up and do the same.)

"Loyal Bushie" Judge Dismisses Valerie Plame's Lawsuit

Valerie Plame risked her life to stop terrorists from getting WMD's and murdering innocent Americans. But when her husband Joe Wilson dared to tell the truth about Bush's pre-war lies, Karl Rove declared her "fair game" and conspired with Dick Cheney and Scooter Libby to expose her identity, destroy her career, and endanger the lives of everyone she worked with to protect us.

Valerie Plame sued Cheney, Libby, and Rove. But of course the case went before a "loyal Bushie" judge named John D. Bates, who made his "bones" with the Bushies as a Whitewater prosecutor under Ken Starr. Bush appointed Bates as a Federal judge in 2001, and a year later he dismissed the GAO lawsuit demanding Cheney's Energy Task Force documents. In 2006, Chief Justice John Roberts put Bates on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to turn a blind eye to Bush's illegal wiretapping of millions of Americans.

Today Bates dismissed Plame's lawsuit by claiming the conspiracy against Wilson was "unsavory" but "within the scope of [their] duties."
http://www.democrats.com/loyal-bushie-judge-dismisses-plame-lawsuit

What Cheney, Libby, and Rove did wasn't unsavory - by shutting down a crucial anti-terrorist network, endangering the lives of everyone involved, and undermining the security of the United States, they committed treason.

Valerie Plame will never get justice - and our nation will never be safe - by relying on the Bush-controlled Federal courts. It is way past time for Congress to Impeach Dick Cheney.

The Orange Revolution Begins July 23

On July 23, 2002, the head of British intelligence reported that Bush and Cheney were intent on invading Iraq and planned to "fix the intelligence and facts around the policy". Five years later a million people have died in Iraq as a direct result of these lies with no end in sight. Torture has been institutionalized, habeas corpus eviscerated, and illegal spying made routine. New Orleans lies devastated along with the Constitution and the rule of law. And Bush and Cheney are making a mockery of the Democrats' feeble gestures towards accountability.

Enough is enough, and this July 23rd we will launch a new phase in the movement for peace and justice. We call it the Orange Revolution because starting that day wearing orange will signify that you want Congress to START IMPEACHMENT and STOP THE WAR. The majority of Americans, who want to see Bush and Cheney impeached and want an immediate end to this war, are made effectively invisible by a complicit media. Wearing orange will be our signal to each other, and to the world, about where we stand. Anything orange will do: a t-shirt, a wristband, your shoelaces. Get creative and send us your ideas. Here are a some great items you can wear designed specifically for the Orange Revolution:

http://www.democrats.com/orangerevolution

The Orange Revolution will be launched with acts of civil disobedience in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere to show Congress that we are serious.

In Washington, D.C. on July 23, Cindy Sheehan, Ray McGovern, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Ann Wright, Debra Sweet, Dave Lindorff, David Swanson, Jodie Evans, Medea Benjamin, Kevin Zeese, Tina Richards, and others will march from Arlington National Cemetery to the office of Congressman John Conyers. They will sit in Conyers' office reciting the U.S. Constitution until they are either arrested or he agrees to start impeachment. You can also come and choose not to risk arrest. OPEN LETTERS to CNN From Michael Moore

An Open Letter to CNN from Michael Moore

7/14/07

Dear CNN,

Well, the week is over -- and still no apology, no retraction, no correction of your glaring mistakes.

I bet you thought my dust-up with Wolf Blitzer was just a cool ratings coup, that you really wouldn't have to correct the false statements you made about "Sicko." I bet you thought I was just going to go quietly away.

Think again. I'm about to become your worst nightmare. 'Cause I ain't ever going away. Not until you set the record straight, and apologize to your viewers. "The Most Trusted Name in News?" I think it's safe to say you can retire that slogan.
You have an occasional segment called "Keeping Them Honest." But who keeps you honest? After what the public saw with your report on "Sicko," and how many inaccuracies that report contained, how can anyone believe anything you say on your network? In the old days, before the Internet, you could get away with it. Your victims had no way to set the record straight, to show the viewers how you had misrepresented the truth. But now, we can post the truth -- and back it up with evidence and facts -- on the web, for all to see. And boy, judging from the mail both you and I have been receiving, the evidence I have posted on my site about your "Sicko" piece has led millions now to question your honesty.
I won't waste your time rehashing your errors. You know what they are . What I want to do is help you come clean. Admit you were wrong. What is the shame in that? We all make mistakes. I know it's hard to admit it when you've screwed up, but it's also liberating and cathartic. It not only makes you a better person, it helps prevent you from screwing up again. Imagine how many people will be drawn to a network that says, "We made a mistake. We're human. We're sorry. We will make mistakes in the future -- but we will always correct them so that you know you can trust us." Now, how hard would that really be?

As you know, I hold no personal animosity against you or any of your staff. You and your parent company have been very good to me over the years. You distributed my first film, "Roger & Me" and you published "Dude, Where's My Country?" Larry King has had me on twice in the last two weeks. I couldn't ask for better treatment.

That's why I was so stunned when you let a doctor who knows a lot about brain surgery -- but apparently very little about public policy -- do a "fact check" story, not on the medical issues in "Sicko," but rather on the economic and political information in the film. Is this why there has been a delay in your apology, because you are trying to get a DOCTOR to say he was wrong? Please tell him not to worry, no one is filing a malpractice claim against him. Dr. Gupta does excellent and compassionate stories on CNN about people's health and how we can take better care of ourselves. But when it came time to discuss universal health care, he rushed together a bunch of sloppy -- and old -- research. When his producer called us about his report the day before it aired, we sent to her, in an email, all the evidence so that he wouldn't make any mistakes on air. He chose to ignore ALL the evidence, and ran with all his falsehoods -- even though he had been given the facts a full day before! How could that happen? And now, for 5 days, I have posted on my website, for all to see, every mistake and error he made.

You, on the other hand, in the face of this overwhelming evidence and a huge public backlash, have chosen to remain silent, probably praying and hoping this will all go away.

Well it isn't. We are now going to start looking into the veracity of other reports you have aired on other topics. Nothing you say now can be believed. In 2002, the New York Times busted you for bringing celebrities on your shows and not telling your viewers they were paid spokespeople for the pharmaceutical companies. You promised never to do it again. But there you were, in 2005, talking to Joe Theismann, on air, as he pushed some drug company-sponsored website on prostate health. You said nothing about about his affiliation with GlaxoSmithKline.
Clearly, no one is keeping you honest, so I guess I'm going to have to do that job, too. $1.5 billion is spent each year by the drug companies on ads on CNN and the other four networks. I'm sure that has nothing to do with any of this. After all, if someone gave me $1.5 billion, I have to admit, I might say a kind word or two about them. Who wouldn't?!

I expect CNN to put this matter to rest. Say you're sorry and correct your story -- like any good journalist would.

Then we can get back to more important things. Like a REAL discussion about our broken health care system. Everything else is a distraction from what really matters.

Yours,
Michael Moore

P.S. If you also want to apologize for not doing your job at the start of the Iraq War, I'm sure most Americans would be very happy to accept your apology. You and the other networks were willing partners with Bush, flying flags all over the TV screens and never asking the hard questions that you should have asked. You might have prevented a war. You might have saved the lives of those 3,610 soldiers who are no longer with us. Instead, you blew air kisses at a commander in chief who clearly was making it all up. Millions of us knew that -- why didn't you? I think you did. And, in my opinion, that makes you responsible for this war. Instead of doing the job the founding fathers wanted you to do -- keeping those in power honest (that's why they made it the FIRST amendment) -- you and much of the media went on the attack against the few public figures like myself who dared to question the nightmare we were about to enter. You've never thanked me or the Dixie Chicks or Al Gore for doing your job for you. That's OK. Just tell the truth from this point on.

CNN Throws in Towel, Admits to Two Errors, and States That All 'Sicko' Facts Are True to Their Source (or something like that)... Moore Realizes All This is Huge Distraction and Then Spends More Precious Time Thanking Paris Hilton for Seeing 'Sicko'... Meanwhile, More than 300 Americans Die Because They Had No Health Insurance During the 8-Day Gupta-Moore War...

July 17th, 2007

Friends,

The mighty CNN, in a lengthy and sad online defense of their woe-begotten 'Sicko' story of last Monday, has admitted that they did indeed fudge at least two of the facts in their coverage of my film and have apologized for it:

1. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN: "To be clear, I got a number wrong in my original report, substituting the number 25, instead of 251." -- My Conversation with Michael Moore, July 11th, 2007; and
2. CNN: "Moore is correct. Paul Keckley left Vanderbilt in late 2006." -- CNN's Response to Michael Moore, July 15th, 2007.
Furthermore, CNN confirmed that all of our statistics in "Sicko" are the correct numbers from the sources we cited. Although CNN still prefers to use older World Health Organization statistics, we will stick to using this year's Bush administration stats and more recent U.N. data. (In "Sicko," we consistently use only U.N. Human Development Statistics unless it's for studies they don't do or have recent numbers for.) CNN did apologize for these two factual errors, but no apology seems to be coming for the rest of their errors. These days, to get the mainstream media to admit they were wrong is rare; to get them to admit it twice, as they have with "Sicko," I guess should be considered a whopping victory. Will they eventually apologize for the rest, or for their reporting on the war? Will the Cubs win the World Series this year?

So the truce has been signed, the peace pipe has been smoked. And the public is left with a much more cautious and wary eye when it comes to CNN. To be fair, this is what happens when you have to grind out "news" 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a staff you have shrunk through layoffs over the years (like all the broadcast networks have done). You end up rushed and having interns do your research. You have robots replace live camera operators. And, if you're CNN, you are constantly dodging the accusation that you are "too liberal." So when you do a piece on someone like me, you have to make sure you add superfluous and standard ad hominems attacking me simply to prove that you are NOT too liberal. I get it.

Until the last month or so, I have not appeared on a single national TV show for nearly 2 and 1/2 years. After the attacks I had to endure three years ago, from a media intent on questioning my patriotism because I dared to speak out against the war when none in the media would, I decided I had had enough and would simply concentrate on making my next film. I had no desire to participate in networks that were complicit in the war because of their refusal the challenge the commander in chief.

I have to admit, though, I do feel kinda bad taking it all out on Wolf Blitzer. It's not like he's the official representative of the mainstream media. I mean, he's from Buffalo, for crying out loud! He said to me at the end of the show last week to please come back on "anytime you want." I will take him up on that offer and appear again with him tomorrow (Wednesday). I'm not expecting a dozen roses or make-up sex -- I only want a promise that there will be no more distorted distractions so we can have a decent discussion about the REAL issues like why 18,000 Americans die every year because they don't have a health insurance card. More than 300 of them died this week. As Ehrlichman said to Nixon in "Sicko": "The less care they give 'em, the more money they (the insurance companies) make."

THAT'S the only thing we should be talking about. How profit and greed are killing our fellow Americans. How profit and private insurance have to be removed from our health care system. CNN should join me in asking why our 9/11 rescue workers aren't receiving medical care. Somebody should send a crew to Canada to find out why they live longer than we do, and why no Canadian has ever gone bankrupt because of medical bills. And all of the media should start saying how much it costs to go to a doctor in these other top industrialized countries:

Nothing. Zip. It's FREE. Don't patronize Americans by saying, "Well, it's not free -- they pay for it with taxes!" Yes, we know that. Just like we know that we drive down a city street for FREE -- even though we paid for that street with our taxes. The street is FREE, the book at the library is FREE, if your house catches on fire, the fire department will come and put it out for FREE, and if someone snatches your purse, the police officer will chase down the culprit and bring your purse back to you -- AND HE WON'T CHARGE YOU A DIME FROM THAT PURSE!

These are all free services, collectively socialized and paid for with our tax dollars. To argue that health care -- a life and death issue for many -- should not be considered in the same league is ludicrous and archaic. And trust me, once you add up what you pay for out-of-pocket in premiums, deductibles, co-pays, overpriced medicines, and treatments that aren't covered (not to mention all the other things we pay for like college education, day care and other services that many countries provide for at little or no cost), we, as Americans, are paying far more than the Canadians or Brits or French are paying in taxes. We just don't call these things taxes, but that's exactly what they are.
See you all when I'm back on CNN tomorrow -- where the discussion will be not be about whose statistics are right, but rather about the guy without insurance who died while I was writing this letter.

Yours,
Michael Moore

P.S. Oh... I forgot to tell you about Paris Hilton. Apparently cooped up for too long at home since getting out of jail, she decided to head out for a night on the town. But where does she go? Clubbing? Cruising down the Strip? No! She and her sister decide to go see "Sicko." Now THAT'S news! So, no more bad words about Paris Hilton!

"Sicko" in Top 5 Grossing Docs of All Time -- This Weekend it's "'Sicko' Night in America!"... from Michael Moore

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Friends,
Good news! "Sicko," after less than three weeks in national release, has become one of the top five grossing documentaries of all time! So, this coming weekend, the distributor is expanding the movie by opening it in nearly 500 new theaters in small cities all over the country (for a total of nearly 1,200 screens nationwide)! From Rapid City to Carson City, from Gettysburg to Pearl Harbor, from Juneau to Battle Creek -- they're all getting "Sicko" tomorrow (Friday). Scores of cities that never have a documentary come to their local theater will now be able to see this one. It's happening all thanks to you who live in the larger cities and have supported "Sicko" so strongly. It's led the studio to say, "Let's make more prints and ship them to Oshkosh (and Beaverton and Brattleboro and Sault Ste. Marie and...)." The entire country goes "Sicko" in less than 48 hours! ( Check here for the complete list of theaters showing "Sicko" in North America.)
So, friends, this is it. This is the weekend to go see "Sicko" if you haven't seen it. I get a lot of letters from people saying they plan to "get around" to seeing it "soon." Well, soon is here! Trying to get theaters to give us screens when we are up against huge summer blockbusters is an almost impossible task. "Sicko" won't be around forever. And if you're waiting for the DVD, ask anyone who's seen "Sicko" -- this is a movie you want to see with a crowd of people in a theater.

So let's pack the movie houses this weekend! Send an email to everyone you know, call your friends and tell them, "It's 'Sicko' Night in America!"
And, to show my thanks to all of you who'll go see "Sicko" this weekend, I'm going to send one of you and a guest on a free weekend to the universal health care country of your choice! That's right. You'll get to pick one of the three industrialized countries featured in the movie where, if you get sick, you get help for free, no matter who you are. All you have to do is send us your ticket stub (make sure it says "Sicko" on it and has the name of the theater and this weekend's date on it -- Friday, Saturday or Sunday - July 20th, 21st, 22nd). Attach the stub to a piece of paper with your name, address, phone number and email and send it to: 'Sicko' Night in America, 888c 8th Avenue, Suite 443, New York, NY 10019. (Yes, you have to use that old 18th century device called the U.S. Postal Service, and it has to be postmarked on or by Tuesday, July 24th). First prize is a weekend in the city of your choice: Paris, London or Toronto. This includes airfare, hotel, meals and, most exciting, a representative from their fine universal health care system who will give you a personal tour so you can see how they treat their fellow citizens. You'll meet people who pay nothing for college and citizens who are in the fourth week of their six-week paid vacation. Oh, and you'll have time to see the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben or whatever they have in Toronto that is old and tall. (If you don't have a passport, we'll pay for that, too!)
Canadians who are reading this -- you're probably thinking, "Hey, what about us? Where do we get to go?" Quit complaining! You're already there! But just to make it up to you -- and to prove we don't hold it against you for smugly walking out of a hospital with the same amount of money in your wallet that you went in with -- we'll let you participate in the drawing, too.

Thanks again to everyone who has gone to see "Sicko." Take a friend or two this weekend and celebrate "'Sicko' Night in America."

Yours,
Michael Moore

P.S. I'll be on "The Colbert Report" tonight (Thursday) on Comedy Central. On a sadder note, my appearance on CNN with Wolf Blitzer has been moved to a later date. Wolf just called to say he had a death in his family and that we would have to re-schedule. Our condolences to him and his family.

Fuel Efficiency Passes Senate!

Our environment scored a great victory last month when the U.S. Senate passed an energy bill that will improve the fuel efficiency of cars and trucks. It is a very positive step for America in addressing one of the major causes of global warming. Thank you for all of your support in this step towards changing America's energy future.

LCV Hails Senate Passage of Energy Bill

Legislation is First Step Toward Changing America’s Energy Future

Washington, D.C.- League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement in reaction to Senate passage of energy bill:

“The passage of this bill is an important first step toward changing America’s energy future. This bill will help reduce our reliance on oil and cut global warming pollution by dramatically improving the fuel efficiency for cars and trucks to 35 miles per gallon by 2020. It also includes important energy efficiency and clean energy provisions.

“Unfortunately the bill does not include a renewable electricity standard nor does it repeal taxpayer giveaways to the oil industry that could have funded more dramatic investments in clean, renewable energy. We hope that these provisions will be addressed as the bill moves forward.

“With this bill the Senate has made a down payment on its promise toward our goal of addressing global warming pollution. To help pass this bill LCV Board Members fanned out across the Capitol yesterday and tens of thousands of activists from around the country made their voices heard. We are committed to working with Congress to pass an energy bill that reduces global warming, saves consumers money on their energy bills and creates jobs. And thanks to the commitment of the Leadership of both the House and the Senate, we also look forward to passing major new legislation to reverse global warming pollution when it comes before the Congress later this year.”

Last night on Hannity Radio, Rudy Giuliani defended himself against criticism for his decision to put New York's emergency command center in the World Trade Center, by saying that in the aftermath of 9-11, they had a new command center up and running in "half an hour" at Police Academy.

But it's not true. The reality, documented in his own book (and the media) is that he and others traipsed around Manhattan for THREE HOURS trying various sites out before settling at the police academy.

From the Democratic Party's research team, here's the timeline:

Option 1: WTC 7 Evacuated Shortly After 9 AM. Giuliani wrote that “Now that the second plane had hit, the command center was being evacuated â€" it was too near to the attacked buildings and could itself be a target...We had to set up a new command center.†[Giuliani, Leadership, p. 5-6]
1 Hour Later: 75 Barclay, Picked On The Run, Is Another Brief Stop. According to Giuliani’s book “Bernie [Kerik] and his staff had already identified a building at 75 Barclay Street, just northeast of 7 World Trade Center.†[Leadership, p. 6] He wrote that “at about 9:50 A.M. we commandeered the offices at 75 Barclay.†[Leadership, p. 10] There the group was trapped and had to escape through the basement into 100 Church Street [Leadership, p. 12]

Another 90 Minutes Later, Tower 1 Falls, Government “No Longer Had A Place To Work.†Giuliani wrote that after Tower 1 fell at about 10:30 AM, “There was no way to find out what was going on.†[Leadership, p. 15]

Now NYPD Searching For New Command Post, Hotel Tribeca Grand Rejected On Arrival. “Bernie had sent a couple of his guys ahead to the Tribeca Grand to set up phone lines and clear the place out, like a scouting party in an Old Western.†Finding this space unsuitable, the group moved on again. [Leadership, p. 15]

Next Stop: Locked Out From Firehouse With A “Couple of Working Phones.†Giuliani wrote that as they continued to seek a new command post, “Somebody mentioned Engine Company 24, a firehouse at Houston Street and Sixth Avenue. We made our way the few blocks north.†[Leadership, p. 15] Because the firefighters were at the World Trade Center, the door was locked and “the entire city governmentâ€"mayor, deputy mayors, commissioners â€" spent several minutes trying to get into the firehouse.†[Leadership, p. 15] Once inside “we found a couple of working phones. [Leadership, p. 16]

Three Hours Later, At Noon: City Government Finally Settled At Police Academy. After a continuing search for a workable location, “Bernie [Kerik] had heard back from his scouts and suggested the Police Academy on 20th Street.†[Leadership, p. 19]

“We arrived about noon, and nearly every member of my administration crammed into the small administrative offices. Soon we were at work, planning our response.†[Leadership, p. 19]

Mitt Romney: Republican of Convenience

Mr. Romney has tacked heavily to the right in his presidential bid, seeking to portray himself as the true conservative in the race, but when he ran for governor of Massachusetts , a heavily Democratic state, he conveyed a much more moderate image. The 40-second video, posted on YouTube.com and a Web site created by the Massachusetts Democratic Party, www.romneyfacts.com, seeks to highlight that difference.

"I've been very clear, I think, to people across the commonwealth that my 'R' doesn't stand so much for Republican as it does for reform," he said in one clip to a reporter on September 21, 2002 on WBZ-TV.

In another interview on WGBH Greater Boston on Sept. 19, 2002, he said, "I'm not running as the Republican view, or a continuation of Republican values. That's not what brings me to the race."

The video also shows Mr. Romney speaking negatively of the dominance of Republicans in Utah , where he had just spent three years running the Olympics.

"I'm not convinced the state would be better off with all Republicans," he said in a speech before the Boston chamber of commerce. "As a matter of fact, I've been in a state like that, for the last three years. It's not a good thing."

Dear Rockridge Community,

Congress seems to be listening to us and to you.

Less than two months ago, in the aftermath of Congress's passage of a supplemental spending bill for the Iraq occupation, we published a powerful article, The Framers Got it Right: Congress is the Decider, that began with this:

Critics of Congress's passage this week of the Iraq supplemental spending bill lament a lack of political courage. But Congress would find it easier to act courageously if the public understood the constitutional stakes. And that public understanding requires correct and persistent framing by Congress itself. What needs to have been framed -- indeed what still needs to be framed -- is Congress's constitutional responsibility and power to set the course on military missions like Iraq.

...

The United States Constitution designates Congress as The Decider: they decide on overall military strategy. That is their constitutional duty. The president is the commander in chief of the military -- and only the military. He is not commander over Congress, nor is he commander over the people of the United States. As such, the president's duty is to carry out the strategic mission given to him by Congress.

We sent our article to the office of the Speaker of the House and to every member of the Progressive Caucus. We asked each of you to send it to your representatives.

To our great satisfaction, yesterday the House of Representatives took a major step toward reclaiming its rightful position as the Decider. Emerging from the shadow of the President, the House passed a bill to begin redeployment of U.S. troops in Iraq within 120 days and to be completed by April 1, 2008. The Bill directs the President to provide an unclassified report to Congress by January 1, 2008 detailing a comprehensive Iraq strategy, including a justification for maintaining "minimum force levels" after April 1 "to protect United States national security interests."

Not only is Congress reclaiming its power, it does so by using the right frames. The House recognizes what Rockridge has been saying for some time: that military victory was accomplished long ago (Occupation: The Inconvenient Truth About Iraq). In Section 2, Sense of Congress, it says:

(2) the Government of Iraq which was in power at the time the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 was enacted into law has been removed from power and its leader indicted, tried, convicted, and executed by the new freely-elected democratic Government of Iraq;

(3) the current Government of Iraq does not pose a threat to the United States or its interests;

This frame makes it evident to the American people that no military goals remain.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has personally demonstrated skillful framing: "This week, every Member of the House will have an opportunity to vote to set a new direction in Iraq. The American people want Congress to bring our troops home, refocus our efforts to fighting terrorism, and hold the Bush Administration accountable." Not only does she establish the primacy of Congress and the accountability of the president, she subtly reminds us all that the occupation in Iraq is not now, nor has it ever been an effective way to combat terrorism.

President Bush responded by trotting out the same tired mantra that Congress ought not "run the war" and should only be "funding the troops." But Senator Ted Kennedy says: "It's not President Bush's decision. It's ours." Even former Bush loyalist Senator George Voinovich of Ohio now rejects the president's argument and asserts Congress's rightful role.

Some, including we at Rockridge, wish this bill went even further. And we labor under no illusion about its chances of being signed into law. But let's give credit where credit is due. Speaker Pelosi and Congress are framing the debate and moving it and the country in the right direction.

We at Rockridge are proud to have made a contribution, and grateful for the support you provided that made it possible.

IRAQ FOR SALE: The WAR PROFITEERS

If there is any doubt in your mind regarding whether or not we should be impeaching President Bush, Vice-President Cheney and their entire administration and the Republican members of Congress who support and enable them to do irreparable harm to our country, then you need to see "IRAQ FOR SALE: The War Profiteers" a new film out by acclaimed documentary director Robert Greenwald.

It shows documentary evidence and testimony of ex-contractors with Halliburton and Kellogg Brown and Root repeatedly saying that Halliburton and Kellog Brown and Root along with many other no-bid Bush Supporting "Defense" Contractors have criminally caused our military and contractor employees unnecessary deaths and disease as well as weakened our ability to provide National Security all in the name of war profiteering.

It shows how Democrats have repeatedly begged Congress to act and to prevent the Pentagon from approving future contracts with contractors who have bilked the U.S. Government and its taxpayers of $100,000,000.00 or more, and Republican Representatives and Senators have repeatedly voted those requests DOWN.

Go here to see some short clips from the movie:

Go here for documentation:

Go here to see Senate votes:

And Go here to see House votes:

This should sicken and enrage anyone who considers themselves to be PATRIOTS.

Here is what the Newspaper, Magazine and blog reviewers have to say about this film:

NEW YORK TIMES: "a horrifying catalog of greed, corruption and incompetence"

LA TIMES: "might unite viewers across all political spectra"

HOUSTON CHRONICLE: "Greenwald tackled a tough subject that Congress won't face"

LA DAILY NEWS: "Iraq for Sale is one Greenwald film with an agenda that maybe everybody can get behind. Conservatives seeing "Iraq for Sale" can seethe at the atrocious waste of taxpayer dollars. Liberals can decry the unprecedented depth and breadth of privatization in Iraq. "

VILLAGE VOICE: "Both a trenchant indictment of war profiteering in Iraq and a memorial for those not included in the military's death toll, Iraq for Sale is a work of intense disillusionment; the wounds are fresh and the testimony of civilian contractors and their bereaved family members is appropriately raw."

TV GUIDE: "carefully researched, and crucial to fully understanding the Iraqi/American enterprise."

DOWNWITHTYRANNY: "I had a chance to see it as a work in progress and it blew my mind....No one should miss a chance to see this movie." - Howie Klein

HUFFINGTON POST: "Greenwald, the master of the issue-doc, has delivered a film that connects on both an emotional and an intellectual level. And, most importantly, it does so by letting the facts -- and the victims of the war's privatization -- speak for themselves." -Arianna Huffington

TAPPED: "It is a great film about a rather sore, sordid subject that President Bush (shown giving a pathetic, mocking answer to a questioner who dared asked about accountability for private contractors), former Halliburton CEO Dick Cheney, Rumsfeld and other neocons would rather not discuss, ever. Which is why people should buy the DVD and watch it, with friends." -Tom Schaller

HUFFINGTON POST: "I saw Robert Greenwald's IRAQ FOR SALE this weekend and I was really impressed by how emotionally and politically powerful it is. The audience cheered at the end, and for good reason: this is an important film. It's also one of the most truly patriotic movies I've seen in a long time. Please see it." -Jeff Kaufman

AMERICABLOG: "I was blown away. It is a riveting, powerful production that should be at the top of everyone's list to see, and then buy for everyone you know. ... Iraq for Sale explains difficult and emotional issues in a measured way that will resonate with people regardless of their background knowledge or political beliefs." - AJ in DC

BUZZFLASH: "Iraq for Sale hits the gut with a punch by focusing on the victims of privatizing our military. The gripping documentary leaves little doubt that war is now being waged, in large part, for the direct profit of a few well-connected companies." - Mark Karlin

OCWEEKLY: "Make[s] you hate this fucked-up quagmire even more."

Film is a powerful tool for story telling and organizing. Brave New Foundation is dedicated to using film and other media to educate the public on issues affecting their lives, but which might not otherwise be readily available through more traditional channels of communication.

“Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers,” is a compelling story of how corporate power has warped national defense, hurt our soldiers and created a far worse problem for America in Iraq than we could imagine. We asked our partners to provide information that we thought would be useful to all who see the film or care about the issues the film raises, to provide us with their insights and suggestions for follow up and action.

The information in this guide comes directly from them. You may already participate in social justice work with one or many of these organizations. Regardless, we encourage you to become more familiar with their work and their particular suggestions about the issue of privatization of military functions. Your own interests and actions may be magnified by the excellent work already ongoing in this very troubling area.

Please use this guide and our film to make a difference. We encourage you to send the guide and film to friends, family and neighbors. Don't let the movie sit on a shelf after you screen it. Pass it on to someone who needs to know the facts.

The easiest and most vital action any US citizen can take is voting. Justice comes first at the ballot box. If you are not registered to vote, please go to www.yourvotematters.org  or text in the word 'iraq' to 75444. Please make sure to go to the polls on Election Day. In addition to any other actions you take as a result of seeing the film, be a good neighbor. Commit to go to the polls with at least two of your friends. And get your friends to do likewise. That’s the only way we can assure change.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this guide and everyone who reads this guide. You are the people we do this for and you are the people whose voices will bring about justice.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights.

AI’s vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.

In pursuit of this vision, AI’s mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.

PRIVATE MILITARY AND SECURITY CONTRACTORS
As the United States conducts the "war on terror”, the U.S. government is outsourcing key security and military support functions to private companies, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan. The work ranges from logistical support to providing security for U.S. government personnel and reconstruction projects to more sensitive roles, such as interrogation of people whom U.S. forces have detained and held in custody.
In this environment, allegations have emerged of contractor involvement in serious human rights violations – including the torture at Abu Ghraib and hundreds of shootings at innocent Iraqi civilians – yet Bush administration officials have made virtually no effort to hold contractors accountable or compensate victims.
WHAT AMNESTY IS ASKING COMPANIES TO DO: AI calls on all private military and security companies to implement a comprehensive human rights policy and monitor and periodically issue public reports on its implementation. AI calls on the companies to screen employees and train them on international human rights standards; make public the results of any investigations the company conducts into alleged human rights abuses by employees; and disclose the terms of U.S. government contracts with respect to human rights.

WHAT AMNESTY IS ASKING THE U.S. GOVERNMENT TO DO: The U.S. government should promptly investigate all allegations of human rights violations committed by employees or contractors of private military firms. Where clear evidence of the violations exists, perpetrators should be immediately prosecuted. The Department of Justice should immediately finalize investigations and, where warranted, initiate prosecution of the 17 pending cases of detainee abuse by government and military contractors. All relevant U.S. government agencies should report to the U.S. Congress annually on the incidents of employees or contractors of private military firms’ use of force against civilians and detainees, and on the status of investigations into the incidents. Finally, the U.S. government should require all employees or contractors of private military firms fulfilling a U.S. government contract to have: (a) been effectively screened, including a review of the criminal and job history for any prospective employee or contractor and, (b) received training in human rights and humanitarian law which shall include both classroom and operational training exercises that emphasizes international human rights and humanitarian law protections.

You can help hold corporations accountable
for human rights violations.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: AI works to improve human rights through the actions of ordinary people around the world, and has a record of real achievement. Prisoners of conscience are released. Death sentences are commuted. Torturers are brought to justice. Governments are persuaded to change their laws and practices. And, sometimes our solidarity keeps hope alive. Hope is a precious weapon for prisoners battling to survive, relatives trying to obtain justice or human rights defenders bravely continuing their work despite danger and isolation. The actions of AI’s members and supporters can make a difference. Act now:

1. Army investigations implicated employees from Titan and CACI in the abuses of Iraqi detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad. Reports of hundreds of shootings at Iraqi civilians have been filed with U.S. authorities. To date, only one civilian contractor has faced charges. Write to the U.S. Department of Justice to act immediately to investigate and prosecute all cases of human rights abuses by civilian and corporate actors operating with seeming impunity in the “war on terror”. You can also write to the companies, like Titan, to express your concern over their human rights policies and practices. For both actions, go to

2. Join AIUSA’s SHARE POWER campaign to hold corporations accountable for human rights violations associated with their operations. Learn how you are connected to multinational companies, no matter who you are, where you work, where you study, or where you live. Then use that connection to press for change – take direct action against companies abusing human rights, raise awareness in your community about the issues, and influence shareholders to consider human rights in their investment decisions. What Can be Done About War Profiteering?

Mission: CorpWatch investigates and exposes corporate violations of human rights, environmental crimes, fraud and corruption around the world. We work to foster global justice, independent media activism and democratic control over corporations.

http://www.warprofiteers.com/  & http://www.corpwatch.org/

Information is Power

At CorpWatch, we believe that information is power and that the pen is mightier than the sword, so we encourage you to seek out the facts (and what better way, than at our websites?) and then take action, by making your voice heard. Write a letter to your local and national political leaders, write an editorial, talk to the media, or make a presentation to your local community group or school.

When you have a group of people with you, you are more powerful than a single voice, although one voice is better than none at all. If you want to challenge power directly, put your words on a poster, a picket sign, a bumper sticker or a T-shirt, and take your message to popular public locations, even if you can't get your voice into the mainstream media. People who see your sign will get a message that they don't normally hear.

You don't have to be confrontational if you don't want to be. You can write down the facts and then practice being persuasive with someone you disagree with. Remember to listen to what the other person has to say and then present them with what you have to say. People who are convinced of your arguments will join you, so try to win people to your side.

Get the Facts

Start here: http://www.warprofiteers.com . We have a whole set of reports and fact sheets on each of the big companies that are profiting out of war (see company profiles on the left) and the latest news on the right hand column. In the middle are our latest investigative features (don't forget to check out Khalil Bendib's cartoons!) Find out which companies have taken money but failed to provide needed services to Iraqis, which companies have overcharged the taxpayer and which ones have stolen money or abused human rights.

If you really want something tangible you can feel and show people, why not get our reports? We have three, not one, but THREE alternative annual reports on Halliburton: starting with "Houston, We Have A Problem" in 2004, all the way up to "Hurricane Halliburton: Conflict, Climate Change and Catastrophe" in 2006. We have a whole book on the war profiteers, titled "Iraq, Inc.: A Profitable Occupation" and an update report called: "Baghdad Bonanza: What Happened to Iraq's Oil Money?" coming out this fall. Write to us and we'll send you a copy (for a small donation) but if you're in a hurry, almost all of the reports are available for free download on our website (except "Iraq, Inc.")

Things You Can Do

Look up companies like Bechtel, Halliburton & Raytheon in your phone book. Do they have a local office? Sometimes the company may have a subsidiary under a different name, so check out their website or just go to your favorite search engine, type in the name of the company and the name of your town, to see if you can track them down. Call them up and say you want to talk to them, and if they don't agree, go over and try to catch the workers during their lunch break.

Remember that the workers aren't the problem and they may even agree with you. You can do it as often as is convenient but make sure that you check what the police rules and practices are - remember you have the right to assemble peacefully, to protest and to hand out literature to anyone who will take it. If you find a disgruntled worker or whistleblower, tell them to call us. That's how we get most of our information.

You can also go to company annual meetings to talk to the owners of the company. You might even meet the CEO yourself and get an opportunity to tell him or her what you think in person. It's not that hard - maybe your pension fund or a local church owns a few shares in that company, which means they can send you to attend the meeting. Or if you're feeling especially wealthy go out and buy a share in the company. That's what we do right here at CorpWatch, and we think you can do the same. (Yes, we do own one share of Halliburton and we go to the meetings every year and speak to all the gathered shareholders. Why don't you join us next year?)

If you want more ideas, email us at our cwadmin@corpwatch.org  or call us directly at +1 510 271 8080 and ask to speak to Sakura Saunders.

The Institute for Policy Studies

The Institute for Policy Studies is a multi-issue progressive think tank founded in Washington, DC in 1963. For the past two years, IPS has teamed with United for a Fair Economy to produce an annual study of CEO pay among major defense contractors.

MAJOR FINDINGS FROM “EXECUTIVE EXCESS 2006”

Personal Profits in a Privatized War: Since the “War on Terror” began, the CEOs of the top 34 defense contractors have enjoyed average pay levels that are double the amounts they received during the four years leading up to 9/11. Their average compensation jumped from $3.6 million during the pre-9/11 period of 1998-2001 to $7.2 million during the post-9/11 period of 2002-2005. By contrast, pay for CEOs at large U.S. companies as a whole is only slightly higher on average today than it was before 9/11.

Military Pay Gap: Defense CEO pay was 44 times that of a military general with 20 years of experience and 308 times that of an Army private in 2005. Generals made $174,452 and Army privates made $25,085, while average defense CEO pay was $7.7 million.

Allowing excessive defense CEO pay in wartime:

• sends the wrong message to those on the frontlines,
• drives the debilitating “revolving door” between the military and private contractors, and
• creates the risk of a profit motive for continuing the Iraq War or getting into new ones elsewhere.

That is a risk no one should have to bear – whether you support the Iraq War or not.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE?

Demand a Ban on Obscene Pay for Wartime Contractors

It is public money which defense CEOs are siphoning off for their own grotesque personal profits. Taxpayers have every right to insist that strings be attached to these contracts which would set a more reasonable standard for defense executive pay (e.g., management guru Peter Drucker and others have argued that CEOs should make no more than 20 times the compensation of their workers). Corporations whose CEOs are unwilling to focus on serving the country rather than maximizing their personal profits should be ineligible for contracts.

Demand Stronger Government Oversight of Wartime Contracts

The defense CEOs’ fat paychecks are particularly outrageous, given the widespread evidence of fraud, corruption, and waste. Congress should establish an investigative committee to go after war profiteers, modeled after the World War II-era Truman Committee. Led by Harry S. Truman when he was still a senator, that committee is credited with saving taxpayers some $15 billion (in 1940s dollars) and preventing hundreds, if not thousands of deaths by uncovering faulty military equipment. Similar investigative zeal is needed today.

Military Families Speak Out (MFSO) is an organization of people opposed to the war in Iraq and who have relatives or loved ones in the military. MFSO was founded in November, 2002 by two military families speaking out to try to prevent a U.S. invasion of Iraq. As of August, 2006, MFSO has over 3,000 member families, with new families joining daily. MFSO’s goals are to end the occupation of Iraq, bring our troops home now, take care of them when they get here, and ensure that our troops are never again sent to kill and be killed in an unjust and unjustifiable war, a war based on lies. MFSO is the largest organization of military families speaking out against a war in the history of the United States.

The Context

In the fall of 2002, as the drumbeats for war were getting deafening in the United States, military families who were opposed to the rush to war noticed that so many of those saying, “We gotta go to war!” were not going anywhere – nor were their loved ones. It was our loved ones who would be sent off as cannon fodder in a war that we believed was about oil markets and dreams of empire.

As military families we know that our loved ones volunteered and signed a contract to protect and defend country and Constitution. But the invasion and occupation of Iraq has nothing to do with protection of country and Constitution. We also know that contracts have two sides – and the implied vow of the U.S. government is that it will never send our troops into harm’s way – to fight and die – in a war based on lies. But that is just what the President, backed by the majority in Congress, did - -and in doing so, betrayed our troops, their families and this nation.

As of August, 2006, over 2,600 U.S. service men and women have died and tens of thousands of Iraqi children, women and men have been killed in this war. Countless more have been wounded physically and psychologically.

Adding insult to injury – with U.S. troops being deployed, re-deployed and stop-lossed (held past their service completion date) and having tours of duty in Iraq extended – billions of tax-payer dollars have poured into the coffers of contractors such as Halliburton, who, on top of everything else, are not providing the services that our troops are dependent on.

The Concerns

Below are just a few examples of the problems described by MFSO members (and their loved ones) regarding contractors in Iraq:

• “My son is back from Iraq A lot of the time there he spent looking for food; I spent money sending him cheeses sausage and care packages as did my mom and [my son’s mother-in-law]. …. A pizza was a slice of bread with ketchup and sliced hot dogs served for a meal in the PX. He remembers being very hungry all the time. I would like to see this exposed. They were ripped off and Halliburton is criminal in this.”

• "After the first Gulf War, they should have realized the guys would need armored Humvees ….They didn’t secure the ammunition dumps, just the oil fields [which left vast amounts of weaponry and explosives falling into the hands of insurgents now using them to make roadside bombs.]…..Our son was killed by a roadside bomb while he was in an unarmored Humvee. …His military job was a cook, [but] he was made into a machine-gunner because the Halliburton company was awarded a private contract to provide meals for the military… To lose a child is just devastating…to have the feeling that his life was wasted in this war, that the war was based on lies, that it didn’t need to be fought.”

• From an email sent to an MFSO member from her son in Iraq: “The… thing we're missing here is decent armored vehicles. The "added armor" vehicles are a myth. They don't protect from IEDs [improvised explosive devices], only bullets. We lost two servicemembers last year because of that. The Government gives millions of dollars to groups like Blackwater so they can have armored SUVs, but they don't think we're worth an M114 Hummer."

What Needs To Be Done

Military Families Speak Out is part of a growing social movement calling for an end to the U.S. occupation of Iraq and for those responsible to be held accountable. The voices of military families and Iraq War Veterans play a crucial role in increasing the awareness and understanding of the public and decision-makers about the war in Iraq and the role that contractors have played.

• If you have a relative or loved one in the military who serves or served during this period of the build-up to and/or the invasion and occupation of Iraq (fall, 2002 to the present) and you are opposed to the war in Iraq, join us! Contact Military Families Speak Out at mfso@mfso.org (website www.mfso.org )

• If you know any military families who are opposed to the war in Iraq, tell them about Military Families Speak Out.

• Promote or organize a forum – in your community, union, educational institution, religious organization, or other group – that features the voices of members of Military Families Speak Out (www.mfso.org ) and Iraq Veterans Against the War (www.ivaw.net ) talking about the realities of this war. Both organizations can help identify local MFSO and IVAW members in areas across the country.

• Do what you can to add your voice to the growing call for an end to the occupation in Iraq; bringing the troops home now; taking care of them when they get here; never sending our troops into unjust, unjustifiable and reckless military misadventures; and holding those responsible for the war in Iraq accountable.

Mission: Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) exists to carry the progressive agenda from the American grassroots to Congress to develop progressive legislation and support progressive policies at the state and local levels.

PDA’s actions regarding war profiteering:
Progressive Democrats of America and our allies on Capitol Hill demand an immediate end to the Iraq War and war profiteering. We also demand accountability for those who lied to the American People and ripped off taxpayers. PDA demands an orderly withdrawal from Iraq, (See: http://pdamerica.org/articles/news/iraq-exit-action.php ).
The Nation reports, “Even before US troops arrived in Baghdad, looting broke out--in Washington. While Republicans in Congress and their allies in the media yammered about the need to silence dissent and ‘support the troops,’ corporations with close ties to the Bush Administration were quietly arranging to ink lucrative contracts that would put them in charge of reconstructing Iraq….The Army Corps of Engineers told Representative Henry Waxman that a Pentagon contract awarded without competition to Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR) … is worth as much as $7 billion over two years….” (See “War Profiteering” The Nation, May 12, 2003, www.thenation.com/doc/20030512/editors ).

The Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) “lost” several billions of dollars. The American Conservative decried: “The 15-month proconsulship of the CPA disbursed nearly $20 billion, two-thirds of it in cash, most of which came from the Development Fund for Iraq that had replaced the UN Oil for Food Program and from frozen and seized Iraqi assets…. [T]here was virtually no accountability over how the money was spent. There was also considerable money ‘off the books,’ including as much as $4 billion from illegal oil exports. The CPA and the Iraqi State Oil Marketing Board, which it controlled, made a deliberate decision not to record or ‘meter’ oil exports, an invitation to wholesale fraud and black marketeering. (See “Money for Nothing” from The American Conservative: http://blog.pdamerica.org/?p=332 ).

Vice President Dick Cheney steered no-bid contracts to war profiteers. We need a commission to investigate war profiteering and prevent more abuses. The best way to end profiteering is to end the war. PDA and our allies in the Congressional Progressive Caucus keep working on this but it’s not easy. The Republican leadership blocks debate the on the war, profiteering, ongoing lies, torture and other scandals. PDA Board Member Rep. Maxine Waters wrote: “For months, the 72-member ‘Out Of Iraq’ congressional caucus, which I chair, has called for a full and honest debate on [Iraq policy]. Unfortunately, [the Republican leadership offered] nothing more than a self-aggrandizing, election-year pat on the back for an embattled president and a majority Republican Party poised to lose control of the House of Representatives.” (See The Iraq Non-Debate: http://pdamerica.org/articles/news/iraq-nondebate.php ).

PDA is calling on state Democratic Parties to adopt resolutions to end the war and occupation. (See: http://pdamerica.org/articles/news/exit-iraq.php ). Contact your local PDA Chapter or State coordinator to work with us and your state and local party officials. (See http://pdamerica.org/orgs/findstate.php  and also see our petition to end the occupation http://pdamerica.org/articles/news/iraq-petition-08-2005.php). We’re mobilizing support for Rep. Jim McGovern’s H.R. 4232, the End the War in Iraq Act of 2005. (See http://pdamerica.org/articles/news/mcgovern-exit-bill.php ). Help PDA by asking your Representative to cosponsor H.R. 4232 and by joining with us to build a governing Progressive majority in House. Together, we will end the illegal war and disastrous occupation of Iraq, and then hold war profiteers and their enablers accountable.

Action Items:
1. Demand enforcement of federal small business procurement requirements, particularly in military contracting. Currently, the government routinely ignores small business contracting requirements, engages in “contract bundling” that freezes out small business from competition, and rewards small business contracts to businesses that have been purchased by large corporations.
2. Support legislation that promotes and rewards energy efficiency in the small business sector. Current energy laws do not encourage affordable efficiency or conservation measures for small businesses.
3. Support legislation that encourages the development of alternative energy sources. Current legislation rewards continued reliance on fossil fuels, which impedes the growth of the alternative energy market that is primarily small-business based.

VotersForPeace is educating and mobilizing a powerful peace voting bloc to end the Iraq occupation and prevent future wars of aggression. Through our VotersForPeace Pledge, we’re organizing millions of voters to withhold support for any candidate who is not calling for a speedy withdrawal from Iraq and opposing future ‘wars of aggression’ which are illegal under international law. We hope that our pledge will force those running for office to reconsider their stance on withdrawal and on future US militarism. Likewise, we hope that it will empower peace candidates to run for public office.

The Institute seeks to offer innovative policy proposals for public debate with the goal of developing an internationalist consensus on the measures needed for the management of a world market economy, the development of a workable system of collective security, and the creation of an active transnational civil society.

We seek to promote greater public understanding of the relationship between domestic and international policy and to train journalists, policymakers, business and civic leaders to be capable of understanding emerging world problems and of reconciling the often competing demands of globalization and national policy.

Finally, the Institute seeks to nurture a new generation of writers and public intellectuals committed to internationalist thinking and to provide students in the New School community with an opportunity to gain practical experience in policy research and advocacy on global issues.

What You Can Do: Curbing War Profiteering

From obscene overcharges to outright fraud, the performance of private contractors in Iraq has been a national disgrace. Even worse, these attacks on the public purse have multiple costs – not only do they waste taxpayer dollars, but they put our troops at risk by providing sub-standard support services and draining funds that could be used to provide better protection for forces on the front lines in Iraq. While a few exemplary members of Congress, including Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) and the Senate Democratic Policy, chaired by Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) have helped expose these abuses, they lack subpoena power and other legislative tools needed to put an end to corporate war profiteering once and for all.

Thankfully, there are two major legislative proposals that, if enacted, would change current government policy, which is literally an “invitation to steal” for unscrupulous contractors. The most recent bill is the “Honest Leadership and Corporate Accountability Act of 2006,” co-sponsored by Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT). Among the features of the bill are a provision to punish war profiteers directly, with penalties of up to twenty years in prison and at least $1 million in fines; strengthening debarment rules, which allow the federal government to suspend companies that have violated the law from bidding on new government contracts; and prevents federal contracting employees from going to work as lobbyists for companies that they awarded contracts to while serving in government.

The second major legislative proposal aims to create a new Truman Commission which would serve as a permanent subcommittee with a mandate to uncover and punish corporate contracting abuses. A similar commission run by then Senator Harry Truman during World War II saved taxpayers over $15 billion, a sum that would be far higher measured in today’s dollars. The key to this proposal, which would give Congress subpoena power to call witnesses, is that it would create a permanent watchdog to dig up war profiteering and other contractors abuses. A June 20, 2006 vote on the new Truman
Committee failed by a vote of 52 to 44, with only one Republican – Sen. Lincoln Chafee, (R-RI) voting in favor of the proposal.

As citizens, we can press our elected representatives to enact these needed reforms by writing and speaking to our members of Congress and urging them to co-sponsor or go on record in favor of the legislative proposals discussed above. We can also write letters-to-the-editor, ask for meetings on the issue with editorial boards of local papers, and educate our neighbors on the issues by sponsoring talks at schools, religious institutions, and in other public forums.

Dear World Can't Wait Supporter,

Thursday night (July 5, 2007), writers John Nichols and David Lindorff, presidential candidate Mike Gravel, and Rev. Lennox Yearwood, and I spoke to a large crowd at a Philadelphia town meeting for impeachment. Three days out from the Bush commutation of Libby’s sentence, the crowd was angry and intense, wanting to know what to do now, and repeatedly on their feet with questions.

I urged everyone to Declare Yourself: Wear Orange Against the Bush Regime as a way of making our demand visible among people everywhere, and showings of Crimes Against Humanity: The Bush Record in house parties.

John Nichols gripped the crowd with his answer to whether it’s “too late” for impeachment, by saying that every 10 minutes, an Iraqi dies in the war. Every 10 hours, someone in the US military is killed. Every 10 days, $2 billion is spent on the war. (That number was recently updated to $4 Billion every 10 days).  We have to stop this, and impeachment is our immediate responsibility.

Senator Mike Gravel urged people in Congress to stand on principle (as he did when reading the Pentagon Papers into the Congressional record in 1971) and sign on to the Cheney Impeachment, H Res 333. We’ll post video highlights soon at www.worldcantwait.org.

There are town meetings Thursday July 12, in Los Angeles and Seattle. Sunday July 15 in Greensboro and San Francisco.

What Happened at the Impeachment Forum Held in Philadelphia on July 5, 2007? http://msmoneygirl.net/content/view/43/56/

The News - George Bush's Impeachment
Written by Ms. Latina Renee a.k.a MsMoneyGirl
Monday, 09 July 2007

Welcome Impeachment Supporters! Thank you for visiting my homepage. I announced to the online internet community that I would attend the Philadelphia Town Hall Meeting for Impeachment. What Happened at the Impeachment Forum Held in Philadelphia on July 5, 2007? This is a write-up on how it went.

I am very happy to provide this briefing. Please click on the link of the respective speaker to view it in its entirety.

There were five speakers John Nichols, Dave Lindorff, Debra Sweet, Mike Gravel, and Lennox Yearwood.

John Nichols

John Nichols , a pioneering political blogger, started us off. He spoke of a troops testimony of how bad things can get when being in a new place with no training. Its such a shame that no one took the efforts to educate our soldiers on the most simple but important lessons. Lack of knowlege is a killer in itself. We should as a natioin should begin to bring forth life.

Nichols informs the public that the Libby pardon is a cover up for the Valerie Plame case. He wants us to be citizens that believes in the document established in Philadelphia in 1776, as he assured us that more and more people are signing on for the H Res 333, a resolution to impeach Dick Cheyney. He declares, "Down with King George". He chants, "Impeach, Impeach!". Click here to see the video of John Nichol's forum speech for impeachment.

Dave Lindorff

Dave Lindorff, an award winning reporter, pointed out the fact that the NSA spying crimes are offensive felonies that are being carried out continuously, even on this day. Lindorff imposes the question, Whos's talking impeachment? I was happy to hear his announcement that the majority of Americans favor impeachment.
So why is Dave Lindorff passionate about impeachment? He's not satisfied with how George Bush doesn't obey the law and how he acts as a tyrannt against the constitution,

"How can congress not impeach this guy?". He reminds the public that we, the people, tell congress how to vote. Click here to see the video of Dave Lindorff's forum speech for impeachment.

Debra Sweet

Debra Sweet , the National Coordinator of the World Can't Wait, spoke on the abortion bill. She calls the agression against the Middle East a nightmare and cries out, "We need radical change". The crowd agreed as Sweet reasoned that we must Drive Out the Bush Regime before its actions are legitimized. She gives us something tangible and visible, the color orange , to take resistance into the streets. Click here to see the video of Debra Sweet's forum speech for impeachment.

Mike Gravel

Senator Mike Gravel , a U.S veteran, told us that the Democrats could easily end the war because the votes are in. He's fed up and declares that we need a "Right Now". Mike Gravel announced that he's a presidental candidate. He states that Americans are supposed to be Law Makers. This is in contrary to the dictatorship George Bush is offensively imposing. Gravel says that he would have George Bush thrown in jail if here were president. Click here to see the video of Mike Gravel's forum speech for impeachment.

Lennox Yearwood

Reverend Lennox Yearwood Jr. , a hip-hop connoisseur, and community activist, brought the town hall meeting to its closure. He roared, "Enough Is Enough!". He opposes how Bush has destroyed the constitution and breaks the law at will. He suggest that the members of congress are afraid. Yearwood preaches that we have a weapon, the Admendment. We can use our weapon to impeach! Click here to see the video of Lennox Yearwood's forum speech for impeachment.

That concludes the Philadelphia Town Hall Meeting for Impeachment. As your host of George Bush's Impeachment, I encourage you to rid the world of chaos and confusion. IMPEACH!

Another key supporter of Republican presidential contender Rudy Giuliani suffered an embarrassment when he admitted last night the "serious sin" of at one time calling an escort service accused of being a prostitute ring.

Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), who is Giuliani's most prominent Southern conservative supporter, was implicated when the so-called "D.C. Madam" disclosed that his telephone number was found among the telephone records of the escort service, Pamela Martin and Associates, in a period before he was elected to Senate in 2004.

Long-Time Staff Leaving McCain Campaign €" Salter, Weaver and Nelson Gone

It's been a hard year to be a Republican candidate, from flip-flopping and having to pander to the right-wing fringe of the Republican party. After a bad fundraising quarter, MSNBC is reporting that John McCain's campaign manager Terry Nelson and chief strategist John Weaver are leaving the campaign.

UPDATE: Mark Salter, McCain's long-time chief of staff and co-author of his five books, is apparently also leaving the campaign. Republican sources close to the campaign are saying that the three did not leave amicably.

Republicans Snub the NAACP.

Up to nine presidential candidates will take the stage at Cobo Center on Thursday morning to woo the African-American vote. At most, there will be one Republican.

It's not for lack of an invitation. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People extended invitations to all announced Republican and Democratic candidates two months ago. The national staff of the civil rights organization followed up with phone calls.

But the three leading Republican candidates -- U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and a Michigan native -- have all said they won't come, citing scheduling conflicts.

The above article ran in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal on Sunday, July 8th, 2007.  It was located in the Crossroads section, page 5J in "Your Opinions", and was provided all of 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" of space.

If you weren't outraged by the way that Bush and his administration treated our troops, and our wounded vets, you should be outraged by their treatment of those who gave their lives in service to our country.

Being brought home in a cardboard box, with baggage ties and a pre-printed American flag, is nothing more than another slap in the face for them.

And consider why this action is being taken.  This is just another cost saving measure, being taken by our government when our military is being stretched to the limit.

It appears that our military recognizes that not only are the number of dead being brought home stretching beyond our capacity to handle them, but that they must be expecting many more to die if they have to mass produce cardboard boxes with American flags pre-printed on them.

I guess they feel that they have to cut costs somewhere in the $8 Billion being spent every month on this fiasco, in order to maintain the same level of profits for Halliburton, Kellogg Brown and Root and the other Bush/Cheney corporate cronies who benefit from their no-bid contracts.

(Update on this post, the GAO recently updated its estimates on how much is being spent on the War in Iraq, and they are now saying that it is closer to $12 Billion a month.)

"You would have to be DEAD to be unaffected by it"

Michael Moore makes public a secret memo from Blue Cross Vice President of Corporate Communications who distributed it in an effort to discredit Michael Moore's new film "SiCKO"

BlueCross Secret Memo Re: 'Sicko' ... "You would have to be dead to be unaffected by Moore's movie..."

July 6th, 2007

Friends,

An employee who works at Capital BlueCross has sent us a confidential memo written and circulated by its Vice President of Corporate Communications, Barclay Fitzpatrick. His job, it seems, was to go and watch "Sicko," observe the audience's reaction, and then suggest a plan of action for how to deal with the movie.

The memo, which I am releasing publicly in this email, is a fascinating look at how one health care company views "Sicko" -- and what it fears its larger impact will be on the public. The industry's only hope, the memo seems to indicate, is if the movie "flops."

Mr. Fitzpatrick writes: "In typical Moore fashion, Government and business leaders are behind a conspiracy to keep the little guy down and dominated while getting rich."

No. You don't say! That can't be!

BlueCross V.P. Fitzpatrick seems downright depressed about the movie he just saw. "You would have to be dead to be unaffected by Moore's movie," he writes. "Sicko" leaves audiences feeling "ashamed to be...a capitalist, and part of a 'me' society instead of a 'we' society."

He walks out of the theater only to witness an unusual sight: people -- strangers -- mingling and talking to each other. "'I didn't know they (the insurers) did that!' was a common exclamation followed by a discussion of the example," according to Fitzpatrick.

He then assesses the film's impact: "[T]he impact on small business decision makers, our members, the community, and our employees could be significant. Ignoring its impact might be a successful strategy only if it flops, but that has not been the history of Moore's films ... If popular, the movie will have a negative impact on our image in this community."

The BlueCross memo then suggests a strategy in dealing with "Sicko" and offers the BCBS "talking points" to be used in discounting the film.

My heartfelt thanks to the employee who sent this to me.

And now a word from me to Capital BlueCross:

How 'bout a debate? No more secret memos and hand wringing about the millions seeing "Sicko." Just me and your CEO openly debating the merits of a system that kills thousands of innocent Americans every year.

In the meantime, I hope you don't mind me sharing your thoughts and impressions in your well-written memo. And if the rest of your executive team hasn't seen "Sicko," it opens in an additional 100 cities tonight for a total of over 700 screens across North America. Attendance went up a whopping 56% on the 4th of July, higher than any other film in the theaters right now. But don't be scared, and certainly don't be ashamed to be a capitalist. Greed is good! Especially good for you. There's nothing like having the pre-existing condition of being rich, should you ever get sick and need help.

Yours,

Michael Moore

P.S. Join me at noon EST, today, when I'll be chatting with U.S. Steelworkers, the California Nurses Association, and whoever stops by to talk about "Sicko" and the industry's attempt to stop this movement. Check my website for details.

[The following memo was written by Barclay Fitzpatrick, VP of Corporate Communications for Capital BlueCross]

I was able to see Sicko last night in Lancaster. There were about 30 other viewers in the theatre covering all age groups. I have attached the well-written memo from one of our partners, which describes cases used in the movie, to the end of my memo. Also attached are the latest talking points from BCBSA. I will focus on impact to our brands, issues, and suggested strategies in this memo.

The Movie
You would have to be dead to be unaffected by Moore's movie, he is an effective storyteller. In Sicko Moore presents a collage of injustices by selecting stories, no matter how exceptional to the norm, that present the health insurance industry as a set of organizations and people dedicated to denying claims in the name of profit. Denial for treatments that are considered "experimental" is a common story, along with denial for previous conditions, and denial for application errors or omissions. Individual employees from Humana and other insurers are interviewed who claim to have actively pursued claim denial as an institutionalized goal in the name of profit.

While Humana and Kaiser Permanente are demonized, the BlueCross and BlueShield brands appear, separately and together, visually and verbally, with such frequency that there should be no doubt that whatever visceral reaction his movie stirs will spill over onto the Blues brands in every market. Here are some examples:

* Horizon BlueCross/BlueShield is picked out early in the film in a collage of stories citing bad treatment of members.
* BCBSA is cited for rejecting a woman for coverage due to a high BMI - "too fat" is written across the screen over a copy of her application denial letter, which describes the BMI rejection.
* BlueShield of California denied coverage for a diagnostic test, which the patient later received overseas. Patient sues BS of CA and medical director admits to not 'seeing' the actual denial letter, which was given an electronic signature.
* BlueCross of California denied payment for a major surgery after they discovered a previous yeast infection, then dropped the person for coverage. This is followed by an interview with a person who claims to have been a specialist at finding inaccuracies in applications to enable post-treatment payment denials.
* A BCBSA card is shown while the narrator describes how they (insurers) got wealthy.

In typical Moore fashion, Government and business leaders are behind a conspiracy to keep the little guy down and dominated while getting rich. Nixon Oval Office tapes are used to show how the initial idea of a 'less care = profit' enterprise was supported by the administration and became the HMO paradigm. Legislators are presented as bought stooges for the political agendas of insurers and big Pharma. Insurers are middlemen in the Medicare Modernization Act - which is presented as a trick to charge seniors more for their prescription drugs.

Doctors are barely touched - only in the course of discussing the AMA's work to sink early efforts in the 40's and 50's to start universal health care. He takes efforts to show that doctors live well in other countries despite the existence of universal health care. In follow-up interviews, Moore has stated that he has spoken to and knows many doctors, and "doctors aren't the problem".

In the second half of the movie, Moore walks us through individual stories of the Canadian, British, French, and Cuban health care systems where everything is free and - he reminds us repeatedly - no one is ever denied service because they can't pay. In addition to health care, the government provides free day care, college, and someone to do your laundry. Everybody gets along and takes care of each other and life is beautiful because there is universal health care. As a viewer, you are made to feel ashamed to be an American, a capitalist, and part of a 'me' society instead of a 'we' society - and the lack of universal health care is held up in support of that condemnation.

The Impact
Moore's movies are intentionally intense and his objective in Sicko seems to be to revive the earlier Clinton efforts - not to achieve universal coverage with this movie, but to push the topic to the top of the agenda. He will be just as successful whether proponents mount momentum or discussion entails key stakeholders defending why it won't work.

As a health care industry educated viewer it is easy to pick out where Moore is cultivating misperceptions to further a political agenda, but you will also recognize that 80%+ of the audience will have their perceptions substantially affected. In demonstration of its impact, an informal discussion group ensued outside the theatre after the movie. While some people recognized how one-sided the presentation was, most were incredulous and "I didn't know they (the insurers) did that!" was a common exclamation followed by a discussion of the example.

The unfortunate reality for Capital BlueCross is that as the market leader, we will be affected both in brand and as employees as Moore's efforts in the movie and surrounding PR activity are seen by more of the community. The impact on industry savvy Sales' contacts should be minimal, while the impact on small business decision makers, our members, the community, and our employees could be significant. Ignoring its impact might be a successful strategy only if it flops, but that has not been the history of Moore's films nor the way this one appears to be headed. If popular, the movie will have a negative impact on our image in this community.

There should be no doubt that many of our employees will be asked what they think of the movie by friends, family, and neighbors. We should anticipate that our customer service people will be asked about particular cases from the movie and if we follow similar policies. Word and phrases we have routinely used to date in policy change communications or denial letters, such as "Investigational", will be seen as affirming the film's contentions. The national BCBSA response - while coming out against the film's divisiveness and focusing on the positive work of the Blues - steers media inquiries about policies and denials back to the plans themselves.

There are 4 key areas of misperception cultivated by the movie that we should consider in any messaging strategy:

1. That the industry is all about HMO's. Moore cultivates this further in his interviews. The reality is that HMO's are a minority product and have been for some time.
2. The movie attacks insurers for a profit motive, but makes no distinction among for-profit and non-profit insurers, and in its execution places the Blue Plans together with the for-profit insurers.
3. All plans and employees - from leaders to service representatives - are painted as motivated by profit to deny claims, and only those with crisis of conscience have come forward to confess their sins.
4. Perhaps most damaging of all, Moore completely fails to address the most significant driver of health care costs - our own lifestyle choices - and seeks to focus attention and efforts on the alluring 'quick-fix' of universal health care. It has taken a generation of poor nutrition and exercise to get obesity and related health issues - and subsequent costs - to their current levels, and Moore's movie fails to acknowledge the causal relationship or need to change (he briefly touches the subject in a non-memorable way). Contrast this to the recent Health Care Symposium held in Harrisburg - where a panel of representatives from Government, Insurance, Hospitals, Business, Physicians, and even Lawyers agreed on one thing - that there was no quick fix and that Health and Wellness was the critical area of focus.

Suggestions
I believe the most successful strategy will not be in attacking the movie for its weaknesses or misperceptions, but in distancing ourselves and our brand from the groups and motivations he attacks, demonstrating the good that we do and achieve (aligns with BCBSA strategy), and in articulating our disappointment that he did not address the truly relevant issue of improving our health and wellness. We will convene a team to consider other approaches and work on potential messages for media inquiries, customer service, and employees.

Confidential Memo (from partner)

SiCKO - viewed on 6/26/2007

Takeaways

* The main theme of the movie is that American society needs to focus on the "we" and not the "me" in healthcare.

o This broad message is an overlay for the specific criticisms of the healthcare industry - the movie asks where the morality of the American public lies and contrasts America's approach to health care unfavorably with other nations.

* SiCKO does not go into any depth about how health insurers operate how the health insurance business works - instead it fixates on what it characterizes as the profit incentive to deny care to patients (e.g. examples of barriers to getting health insurance if you are not healthy; examples of people being denied expensive tests or procedures; examples of efforts to deny reimbursement after care has been received.)

* The film draws no distinction between not-for-profit and for-profit insurers - in fact the Blue Cross/Blue Shield brand is intermixed with the for - profit brands as background reference points. o One scene shows a Blue Cross / Blue Shield logo as Michael Moore's voice over begins, "While the healthcare companies get wealthy..."

* The health insurers that get the most airtime are:

o Kaiser Permanente
o Humana
o CIGNA
o Blue Cross of California
o Aetna

* No Pharma companies are mentioned - but SiCKO suggests in multiple instances that prescription drugs are overpriced

o At a pharmacy in London, prescription drugs are £6.65, no matter how large the dose
o In Cuba, one bankrupt 9/11 worker's inhaler costs 5 cents, instead of $100

Further Notes

* Some of the examples of denial of care highlighted in the film:

o A woman with Kaiser Permanente takes her 18-month daughter to the hospital in an ambulance, only to be told to go to an in-network hospital. By the time they reach the second hospital, her daughter has stopped breathing and dies 30 minutes later in ER.

o A woman with Blue Shield of California has a tumor but is denied requests to get an MRI, or to see a specialist. While on vacation in Japan she is given an MRI, and eventually returns to the U.S. to demand treatment from her insurer.

* In the ensuing court case, a doctor admits to denying her request without having reviewed it.

o Blue Cross of California approves one woman's $7,500 treatment, but the approval is later denied for her failure to report a previous medical incident - a yeast infection.

* "They're just looking for a way out," she says

* Other examples of how health insurers avoid paying for treatment:

o One graph (from Humana) shows that doctors with the highest % of denials get a bonus.

o Michael Moore interviews a former health insurance employee who specialized in denying care to patients retroactively - by finding inconsistencies in their medical records.

o A 5-minute piece in the beginning of the movie .

* The film also focuses on the politicians and the funds they raise from Pharma and other player in the health care industry and alleges that the system has been heavily influenced by lobbyists and contributions.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association
Talking Points in Response to Michael Moore's "Sicko"
June 2007

1) The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) and the 39 Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies are committed to improving the U.S. healthcare system for our nearly 100 million members through continuous innovation that reflects the ever-changing healthcare landscape and the needs of the consumer.

2) The Blues recognize the need for improvement of both the coverage and delivery of healthcare. But the divisive tone set forth by Michael Moore and his movie "Sicko" is not helpful. Positive change to our healthcare system can be best achieved through shared responsibility, not recrimination. To ensure Americans have access to the best healthcare that is both timely, efficient, and of high quality, requires the collective contribution of all stakeholders -- consumers, providers, employers and the government.

3) The Blues participation in the Health Coverage Coalition for the Uninsured is a primary example of how the broader healthcare community is working together to reduce the number of uninsured in the United States.

4) The Blues are working on myriad initiatives that ensure Americans have access to quality and affordable healthcare. Each day, Blue Plans across the country are bringing healthcare value to their members in a number of ways such as new advances in health information technology and greater access to cost and quality information. In addition:

o The Blues recently created Blue Health Intelligence a data resource that will shine light on emerging medical trends and treatment options in an unprecedented way. To further the use of evidenced-based medicine, BCBSA has called upon Congress to establish an independent, payer-funded institute that will study the comparative effectiveness of new and existing medical treatments and procedures.

o Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies are at the forefront of healthcare transparency by providing their members with online access to real-time information related to provider quality and the cost of common healthcare services. In addition, the Blues have committed to making personal health records available to their members by 2008.

o We are working to ensure that Medicare is funded appropriately and that seniors continue to have access to comprehensive benefits.

5) The Blues are proud of these efforts and we will continue to work with consumers, providers, employers and the government to provide Americans with the healthcare services and information they need to lead full, healthy lives.

Now that Blue Cross has had their say in their memo above, here is what I would recommend.  See the movie and decide for yourself.

Ask yourself, who is looking out for whom?

Why is it that the richest country in the world is paying more per capita than any other country in the world for healthcare and is getting far less than some of the poorest countries in the world that are offering universal healthcare?

Why is it that heathcare industry and pharmaceutical industry insiders and politicians who are paid off by them are claiming that they can't provide universal healthcare to you, while they are benefiting from 100% healthcare coverage themselves?

Why is it that the American public allows this to continue year after year, while the healthcare industry, the pharmaceutical industry and their paid off politicians claim that ours is the best healthcare in the world?

Why do we allow more than 18,000 people to die in America every year simply because they lack the money to pay for life saving surgery or medications?

We went to war because the President lied to us and told us that Iraq had something to do with the deaths of 2,752 men, women and children on 9/11.  We've spent almost half a TRILLION dollars fighting a war that cannot be won using his inept "strategy" and still no end in sight.  Experts estimate that even if we do withdraw in the very near future, our actual costs of this war, including ongoing medical care for our veterans, rebuilding our military and replacing all the equipment that was destroyed, will be somewhere between $1 Trillion and $2 Trillion.

Do you think that a truly compassionate conservative could at least find it in their heart to spend a small fraction of that amount to go towards providing healthcare and a better life to those in need of healthcare, rather than just providing the bare minimum, especially when the universal healthcare model has been repeatedly proven in other countries around the world which are all less affluent than we are?

Libby Sentence Commuted; Rule of Law Sentenced to Death

July 2nd, 2007 by LeftHook

“They keep repeating the line that only the “left” will be angry. Is it now the conservative position that only left-wingers actually object to people getting away with perjury? …The defense of the commutation is complicated and unpersuasive. The case against it is simple: You don’t get a cleaner example of different justice for the rich and powerful. It seems to me that real conservatives - not the lawless hoodlums now parading under that banner - should be as outraged as anyone. This man risked national security for political payback, and perjured himself to cover it up. This commutation will rightly become a symbol of a great deal of rot in Washington that needs to be swept clean. Get out that broom.”

Conservative Andrew Sullivan, 7/2/07

“The problem is, all along President Bush said, “We gotta let the legal system work, we gotta let the jury make a decision, we gotta let the judges do this, we gotta let this prosecutor do this. But it’s going to look like he was only giving them that opportunity so long as they came to the conclusion he wanted. And the very day that they did not, the very day that even Republicans say that this man needs to go to jail, [the President] says, “Well, you know what, I don’t agree. So I’m going to change this.” And I think that does really undermine the system.”

Constitutional law professor, Jonathan Turley, 7/2/07

Dear Friend,

I’m outraged. President Bush commuted Scooter Libby’s prison sentence wiping away two and half years of jail time with the stroke of a pen. President Bush ignored Libby’s felony conviction for lying to investigators, ignored the jury’s guilty verdict, and ignored the rule of law that governs our nation.

We expect more from our President. We expect honor and integrity, we expect moral leadership. We expect our President and his staff to be held to a higher standard.

Tell President Bush that you are appalled by his actions. Sign our petition today letting President Bush know that this outrageous conduct won’t be tolerated by the American people.

Sincerely,

Chuck Schumer

P.S. It’s at times like these that I realize just how important a strong Democratic Senate is to our nation. Democrats are fighting the Republican’s abuse of power but we can’t do it without your help. Tell President Bush that you are appalled by his actions. Sign our petition today letting President Bush know that this outrageous conduct won’t be tolerated by the American people.

President Bush has commuted the sentence of Scooter Libby and we need to show Bush his actions just aren't acceptable. Tell your friends and family to sign our petition today. If you received this message from a friend, click this button to join the DSCC.

Ever Wonder Why YOUR TAXES Are SO HIGH?

Maybe it is because BILLIONAIRES like Rupert Murdoch and his company, News Corporation Don't Have To.

"By taking advantage of a provision in the law that allows expanding companies like Mr. Murdoch’s to defer taxes to future years, the News Corporation paid no federal taxes in two of the last four years, and in the other two it paid only a fraction of what it otherwise would have owed. During that time, Securities and Exchange Commission records show, the News Corporation’s domestic pretax profits topped $9.4 billion."

Are you seeing RED yet?  You oughta!!

Special Message from Paul Newman

Dear Friend,

When I was asked to record a video message on behalf of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), I quickly agreed because I am proud to stand with a new generation of Democrats against a president who poses what I believe to be the biggest internal threat to American democracy in my lifetime.

The Democratic majority in the Senate is a slim one, and right now it's the firmest line we have against a right wing run rampant. If you want to help preserve and strengthen that majority, you need to know about the DSCC.

Message from Robert Greenwald:

The email Bill O'Reilly doesn't want you to open:

Dear activists, colleagues and friends,

A new kind of Brave New Film and campaign has really taken on a life of its own. In the last 5 months, our short Internet films have been watched two million times and have taken on Fox News (and won!), Attorney General Gonzales, John McCain on the war and more.

As it turns out, the creativity and take-no-prisoners approach that defines our documentaries goes a very long way on the Internet -- and allows us to have an impact we never imagined. For example: getting Fox News to back down and apologize for an unfair and outrageous attack on Barack Obama.

We need your help to keep fighting in this new and effective way. Will you become a Brave New subscriber? Pledge $10 a month until November 2008 to fund our aggressive campaigns:

We need to get to 2,000 subscribers at this stage, and we're already almost half way there.

All our videos are free, and should be so they can reach the widest possible audience. We're funded almost entirely by people like you giving $10 or $20 a month. We don't take any advertising or corporate sponsorships, so we aren't beholden to anyone (but you!).

Subscribers have more fun: early looks at all the videos, and special behind-the-scenes access we will unveil soon at our new bravenewfilms.org website. This is your chance to do something.

It's the end of the second quarter, so there are quite a few presidential candidates out there asking for money this week. We're not about getting a particular candidate elected, we're about setting the progressive agenda and making the candidates respond to what we all care about. You make that happen.

Please become a subscriber: http://bravenewfilms.org/subscriber.php

Thank you... now I'm going to get back to the editing room!

Veterans: Military curbing free speech
Protesters in uniform could be downgraded, lose their benefits

The young combat veteran stared at the letter in disbelief when it arrived in his mailbox a few months ago.

The Marine Corps was recommending him for "other than honorable discharge." The letter alleged he had violated the Uniform Code of Military Justice by wearing part of his uniform during an anti-war rally. Furthermore, the letter accused him of being "disloyal," a word hard to swallow for a man who had risked his life to serve his nation.

"All this because I have publicly opposed the war in Iraq since I came back from it," said former Marine Sgt. Liam Madden, 22.

Madden is not alone.

At least two other combat veterans who have returned from tours in Iraq and become well-known anti-war advocates have seen the military recommend them for less-than-honorable discharges. One of them is a young man 80 percent disabled from two tours who was threatened with losing his veteran's disability benefits if he continued to protest in uniform.

Critics — including some groups that have been the most supportive of the war—say the crackdown on these men constitutes a blatant attempt to quiet dissension in the ranks at the very time more and more members of the armed forces are publicly questioning the war they are being sent to fight.
